Mary C. McCoy McKay, 101, Formerly Smethport, PA

Silver Spring, Md. - Mary Catherine McCoy McKay, 101, a resident of Brook Grove Nursing Home since September 2008, passed away Monday (April 6, 2009) due to respiratory failure.

She was born Jan. 1, 1908 in Smethport, Pa. After graduating from Smethport High School, she received a scholarship to attend nursing school at Columbia University and became a registered public-health nurse in 1928.

In 1931, she married Alexander H. McKay of Bradford, Pa. She and her son joined her husband in Berchesgaden, Germany, from 1947 to 1948 when he served as a U.S. Army first lieutenant with the occupation force after World War II.

Upon returning from Germany, Mary worked at the Girl Scout office in Smethport. Alex and Mary moved to North Chili, NY, in 1952 where she worked for the health department in migrant camps in Brockport, NY. She then moved to Florida in 1974 and remained there until Alex died in 1980. Moving to Silver Spring she resided at Leafy House and Homecrest House before going to Brook Grove.

Mary had many friends, had a very alert mind, played bridge regularly, read many novels and other books and enjoyed doing crossword puzzles.

Surviving are her son, Bruce (Suzie) McKay of Silver Spring; three grandchildren, Kelly, Michael and Christopher; and four great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held April 22, 2009, at 11 a.m. at Grace Episcopal Church, Silver Spring. Burial will take place in Rose Hill Cemetery, Smethport, at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hamlin Memorial Library, 123 S. Mechanic St., Smethport, PA 16749.

just think of what this person saw in her lifetime WOW !!!! 101 years old. GOD BLESS we should all be so lucky.
