PA House ExpectedTo Get Medical Marijuana Bill Today

Legalized medical marijuana debate expected in House session

By MIKE REUTHER mreuther@sungazette.com

Some area lawmakers aren't exactly getting a rush over a bill to legalize medical marijuana in the state.

The measure expected to be introduced today by state Rep. Mark Cohen, D-Philadelphia, would offer prescriptions of the drug to patients suffering from cancer, multiple sclerosis and other diseases.

"I did not sign on as a co-sponsor," said state Rep. Garth Everett, R-Muncy. "No one in Lycoming County, or in the 84th legislative district contacted me on that. I think before I would get all excited about that I would want to hear more about it."

The measure, if passed, would make Pennsylvania the 13th state permitting the use of marijuana for medical purposes.

Among the therapeutic benefits of marijuana, medical experts and others contend, is its ability to relieve pain, reduce nausea and vomiting, particular for cancer patients. More...

"To say that we should legalize and tax this drug is not supported by the medical community at large nor law enforcement. I join Attorney General Tom Corbett in opposing this legislation."

One word - ridiculous. How many of you actually know why marijuana was criminalized? Do some research. Early last century hemp was set to exceed timber in the production of paper as it was more cost effective. The rich guys who owned these timber companies could not let their business suffer such competition and so they lobbied and padded their political friend's pockets to make marijuana illegal. That's the truth.

Now, if anyone honestly believes that marijuana is worse than alcohol then you're either brain-washed or retarded. "Gateway drug"? Give me a break. Alcohol is just as much if not more of a "gateway drug".

The truth now is that marijuana is still lobbied against by pharmaceutical companies. After all, you cannot patent every strain of marijuana, and if you did a new strain could be produced. Drug companies can however protect their interests by patenting man made chemicals that destroy our bodies and keep their pockets full of our hard earned cash.

America wake up. Let me ask you all just one simple question. When was the last time you heard of a CURE for a disease? Everyday drug companies come up with new "treatments", but never cures. Why? It's quite simple and it's right in front of our faces. It's the same reason that Ford will never make a vehicle that lasts forever. They would go out of business. The same applies to drug companies. If they cure a disease they will only sell enough of their drugs to eradicate the disease, then that's it. By "treating" illnesses they keep the profits coming. Best of all most drugs have side effects so it's a domino effect. Sell more drugs to mask the side effects of the drugs being taken already.

You tell me how much your health is worth.

It's insane that a plant is illegal.

Do your research is all I ask, stop listening to the propaganda and believing everything you hear in the news.

Believe what you want, but the truth is that marijuana is nowhere near as harmful as the government (drug companies best friend) wants you to believe.

Legalize marijuana and tax it! Take the profit from the bums selling pot on the street and not paying any tax on the sales.

Free country? HAH!

4/29-1;39- That's a pretty good post! Haven't smoked the stuff for a long time, but listen to the drug companies ads, talkin about all the side effects(nausea, bleeding, shortness of breath etc.) from thier "new drugs" and it seems like they sometimes do more harm than good!!? The State Store sure makes a good buck off Whiskey and then the state bust ya after ya drink it! At least you can be fairly assured the booze hasn't been tainted with chemicals from China or somewhere! Maybe pot should be regulated and taxed like Jack Daniels!! Seen a lot more a-holes on booze; then pot ,over the years!! If nothing else, it should be legal for medicinal purposes! But then again, I really don't care one way or another!! Just my opinion!! Brad
