Statement From Senator Specter On Party Switch

Specter to Leave GOP

Pennsylvania Sen. Arlen Specter will switch from the Republican to the Democratic Party, multiple sources tell CNN.

Specter's Statement:
I have been a Republican since 1966. I have been working extremely hard for the Party, for its candidates and for the ideals of a Republican Party whose tent is big enough to welcome diverse points of view. While I have been comfortable being a Republican, my Party has not defined who I am. I have taken each issue one at a time and have exercised independent judgment to do what I thought was best for Pennsylvania and the nation.

Since my election in 1980, as part of the Reagan Big Tent, the Republican Party has moved far to the right. Last year, more than 200,000 Republicans in Pennsylvania changed their registration to become Democrats. I now find my political philosophy more in line with Democrats than Republicans. Good now he is where he belongs with the rest of the menaces of this once great society!!

Fiscal Conservative/Social Liberal said...

Oh please. (yes, I'm totally rolling my eyes at 12:47)

He's a moderate. He's one of the thousands that finds that the ideals of both parties appeal to him. Or that some of the ideals of both parties do not.

That hardly makes him a menace to society. It makes him human. And thoughtful. At least he's open minded enough to reevaluate his stance. He doesn't follow blindly. That is to be heralded, not condemned.

We don't have to agree with him, but there's nothing wrong with his decision either.

And get over your two party, the other people are evil, idiocy. You know better.

Guess what? He is going to where he will get the votes! Nothing more nothing less.

Great post FC/SL. The Republican Party needs to seriously address it's views on social exclusion. It worked when the voting public consisted of mostly heterosexual white people. Gradually over the past couple of decades the out gay community has become a huge activist population. The black community has been brought into the political environment especially with the election of President Obama. And the latino population has skyrocketed. If the Republican Party doesn't bring their social views left and start to offer something to these communities then they will never regain power because their just won't be enough republican voters left.

Fairness said: Again 12:47 PM it is very hard for someone such as you seem to be an other person who can not think for him self. And as 12:56 PM stated "Get over the two party", OUR COUNTRY CAN NOT AFFORD TO BE WORRIED ABOUT WHICH PARTY DOES WHAT, JUST "GETER DONE"!!!, and soon.

he's acted like a democrat for years...he's just now admitting it. Remember, he voted FOR this stimulus package and like most of congress probably didn't read 1/4 of it!

Anonymous said...

The real problem is he has been in office since 1980.

4 and done. Life long terms is what is killing our government not left or right.

I am a firm believer that we should not have party lines, they shouldn't call themselves Democrats or Republicans they should call themselves Americans and do what is the best for all not worry that someone won't like you voting for a demo or republican you should vote for the person that is best for the job.

It doesn't matter what party he belongs to, I'm still not going to vote for him. He's been in the Senate too long and it's time for someone else to take his place.

Republicans in power-I am a Republican
Democrats in power-Now I am a Democrat
His political philosophy hasn't changed, just the voter base.
He just showed he has no real philosophy.

Term limits could be a great thing, Senators 8 year terms with one reelection, Congressmen 5year term with 2 reelections. Maybe them the house can do some work instead of worrying about reelection. Now longevity means for pork for the home district.
Nothing wrong with moderates from either party, at least they are willing to compremise on many important issues. Spector is okay

He may be the original RINO.I am a lifelong Republican and I have NEVER voted for him.
He is Sen. Hugh Scott reincarnated.
Typical Philly Pol, they can't be trusted.
He voted to give away the Panama Canal. This is how far back it goes.
He has cut the Republican Party's throat forever.
The Dem's had better watch their back. He has a sharp knife.

I've followed Specter's career for a long time. He's always been an unprincipled snake and still is. I agree with the folks who comment they want term limits for our federal legislators. It's a very good idea and a good idea for state legislators too.

If Specter was truly a fiscal conservative and this was about the GOP not having room for so-called social liberals or moderates, I would get what Fiscally Conservative/Socially Liberal is saying...but Specter is and has been a fiscal leftist.

What Specter's statement should have read is the following:

"I am taking this action now because there are fewer than thirteen months to the 2010 Pennsylvania Primary and my polls are showing the Republican voters in Pennsylvania are finally fed up with me and it's impossible for me to win in the GOP Primary."

I hope Bush and Santorum are happy they supported Specter in the GOP Primary 5 years ago. We need principled leaders, not politicians who just strive to further their own political careers.

30 years in the US Senate is long's time for a new Senator to be representing us.

It's too bad we only have two evils to choose from. However, Republican being the lesser of the two...this is no sad move for the party. It's house cleaning with no real effort. Dems have the vote of the liberal whites, latinos, blacks, white trash, and welfare. (I'd add illegal immigrants to the list but I don't think they're allowed to vote...for now.) All of which are out-breeding (or over-breeding) your traditional blue collar, gun toting, good ol'fashioned American. Wish I could bring more little one's into this world and fill their heads with all my right-wing rhetoric. However, I actually pay bills and work for a living. (For those of you who don't understand...preferrably get G.E.D., get job, then keep job, pay bills, and then bear children. Morale isn't always easy.)

What's Tom Bowman going to do now?

Vote Specter out!!!!

We should all send him a "thank you" card and write "good riddens" to you in it!

Jumped ship because he knew it was sinking and there was no way in hell he would be re-elected by the PA republican party. Two 4 year terms and you should be out, these life time politicians are just as bad as a welfare recipient if you ask me, they have lived off of our tax dollars long enough!

After 29 years as a US Senator, please retire...not that he will have to live off the social security fund he helped rape! Maybe he should have voted to put part of that stimulus package money back into the social security, oh that is right, he did not have time to read it BEFORE he placed his vote. With all of Nancy P.'s threats, she probable scared there is a Dem to be proud of!

If Obama can print the money "he" needs to fix Wall Street, banks, and auto companies maybe he should print some to put back what our great Washington idiots spent from the social security account!

Will we never learn, they are 2 sides of the same coin.

Once you move beyond the left vs right, Republocrat vs Demopublican, red state vs blue state paradigm you see things in a different light.

Until then just continue to blame each other for job loss, more control, less freedom, higher taxes, a worthless dollar, more globalization on and on and on.

Heres a start

And by the way, Spector was a Democrat when he a DA in Phila.

ALL politicians act first in their self interest, it's the nature of the game.

Arlen thinks for himself and for the state. He does not follow the orders of any party. The people who are talking from the right wing of the Republican should check the number of PA Republicans who changed parties before the last election. We need a three party system: right, middle, and left. It doesn't matter what you call them. I think the middle of the road voters want a senator with a broader view.

I grew up in the great state of PA, (Roulette to be more specific), leaving some 30+ years ago. It shamed me when I saw Specter's switch. Used to be that the definition of a carpet bagger was someone who moved from place to place until he (or she) fit the wants (not necessarily the needs) of the folks that would get them elected (think Hillary Clinton here), but Specter updates the definition to fit his need to fit into a mold that will better suit his desire to be reelected, regardless of what the current Adminsitration and Congress is doing to destroy the future of our children and grand children. Hope the good common sense of the majority of Pennsylvanians throws his butt to the curb where it belongs!!

"It's too bad we only have two evils to choose from"

This is the battle we need to fight. There are other parties, Libertarian Party, Constitutional Party.

I would rather vote for something I want and not get it, than vote for something I don't want and get it.

But keep bickering and pointing fingers, I'm sure things will get better for you. It has gotten better over the last 40 years, hasn't it?

Meanwhile, heres the next shoe your Democrats and Republicans are trying to dump on you.

Maybe he has Swine Flu and is confused????!!!!!!

11:28, I'm not sure I follow you.

Specter changed to get reelected - fair enough. If he gets reelected, doesn't that mean he did what the people want?

I don't know... it seems to me you're going party line on us here. Republican and Democrat are just monikers.

That said, I'm not saying you should vote for the guy. You should vote for the best candidate.

Lucky for you next May or thereabouts you'll have that chance. Republican primary.

We have one coming up in a few weeks too. I do hope everyone remembers to cast a vote, even though it's not the presidential election. After all, if you don't vote, you really have no right to complain about who is elected now do you.

He should be made to give up his seat NOW!

Replace him with a republican NOW!

When the parties are controlled by the extremists from either the right or the left, it is time to move to the center, this is something that Specter and Mcain both tried hopefully for the better of our country, then in an attempt to satisfy the right wing John McCain picks Sarah Palin wasn't she great !!! I can see why the democrats won, wake up republicans let the moderates run our country then maybe we can all prosper.
