DEP FINES B & L PORTABLE TOILET RENTAL INC. FOR SEPTAGE RELEASE IN TIOGA COUNTY

Employee Dumped Poop From Septic Tanks On Croft Hill Road

WILLIAMSPORT – The Department of Environmental Protection has fined B & L Portable Toilet Rental Inc. of Tioga $2,000 for spilling septage onto Croft Hill Road in Farmington Township, Tioga County.

“A company employee released septage onto the road in March after experiencing a problem with his vehicle,” said DEP Northcentral Regional Director Robert Yowell. “B & L did not notify us about the release, which is inexcusable.”

Septage is partially treated household waste stored in a septic tank. It is periodically pumped out by private businesses and taken to a municipal sewage treatment plant for final treatment.

DEP inspectors investigated a citizen complaint in late March and discovered septage and related debris on Croft Hill Road for a distance of about one half mile. When DEP contacted B & L, company officials admitted that their driver had released a tanker load of the material onto the road after unsuccessfully trying to resolve a mechanical problem with the vehicle.

In addition to the fine, B & L was required to clean up all remaining septage from the road. The fine was paid to the Clean Water Fund that provides funding for cleanups across the state.

Now that took a rocket scientist to dump the sewage on the road around your broken down vehicle. The mechanic who had to come to repair it probably appreciated the fresh scent in the air.
