Official Election Count Gets Underway Today

sandylewisMembers of the Potter County Canvassing and Computing Board will convene this morning (Friday, May 22) to begin the official count from Tuesday’s Municipal Primary. Director of Elections Sandy Lewis (shown), who heads the board, has estimated that the panel will wind up its work late next week — possibly by Friday, May 29 — after resuming next Tuesday following the three-day holiday weekend.

Although numerous candidates and their supporters have contacted her office in an effort to obtain election results prematurely, Lewis pointed out that the Canvassing and Computing Board’s work, which is required by state law to certify returns, is time-consuming and must be meticulous. Once the official count is certified, the public will know the results of everything from the countywide races to contests for school board, township supervisor, tax collector and other local nominations.

Unofficial results from the Municipal Primary are shown below. Successful candidates will have their names appear as party nominees in the Nov. 3 Municipal Election. All results posted on Potter County Today are unofficial until such time as the county’s Canvassing and Computing Board completes its work. The totals below do not reflect six absentee ballots, as well as 12 provisional ballots that may or may not ultimately be counted.

President Judge: Steve Minor 1,737, Dan Glassmire 1,100, Bob Kuhl 600

District Attorney: Andy Watson 1,842, Dawn Fink 1,574

Coroner: Kevin Dusenbury 2,168, Benjamin Olney 1,251

Coroner (write-in): totals unavailable; a sampling of approximately one-third of Potter County voting districts show Kevin Dusenbury leading by a margin of about 78 percent to 22 percent. Potter County Today

What could possibly take that long to tally the votes?

Are electronic voting machines not being used everywhere?
