Public Encouraged To Attend BioBlitz At Austin Dam

Anyone with an interest in science is encouraged to attend “BioBlitz,” now underway at the Austin Dam Memorial Park.

About three dozen scientists and environmental authorities, several of them known worldwide, are participating in an educational experience involving area students and other members of the community.

It’s an event to identify as many species of life as possible in a highly engaging 30-hour period, designed to spark the interest of local school students in the fascinating world of science.

Bioblitz kicked off Friday morning at 8:30 with an orientation, followed by a series of workshops that will continue both days. A 2 pm ceremony on Friday will recognize sponsors and volunteers.

Friday night’s schedule includes sonic monitoring of birds and bats with electronic equipment, owl-calling, moth studies and more activities. BioBlitz will continue all night, concluding at 3 pm on Saturday.

Among participants will be: Dr. Brady Porter, a noted zoologist from Duquesne University who has studied native fishes in Potter County; David LaPuma, who is conducting important bird research; Dr. William Shear, a spider expert; small mammal authority Dr. Kyle Selcer, and botanist Bonnie Isaac.

Bill Powers, an expert on motion-driven photography, recently set up more than two dozen sophisticated cameras in the Freeman Run valley. He is sharing the discoveries he makes in the dark. Authorities on herpetology, birds, forestry, conservation and other specialties are also attending.

Those attending should use the Austin Dam Memorial Park entrance located off Rt. 872, north of the dam ruins. Additional information on BioBlitz is available on a website,

The weather is great down by the Dam Ruins. Looking forward to seeing you there.

Once again Austin does something great for the children.

I'm heading there right now after I get done typing.

Too bad it took someone from Coudersport to set all these events up.

I am so sick of you Austin haters - stick a sock in it - or better yet - GO BLOW.

Too bad you're an idiot. This Coudersport vs. Austin thing is ridiculous.
Someone from Coudersport

Who are you referring to? If it is Mr. Arthur Metzger, he may live in Coudersport, however, his employment is in Austin and that is who in part sponsored this event.

Man, are you jealous?? I have never seen the like of it. Praises start about a good project and someone has to come along with their hot air to mess it up.

Hope the windmills start up pretty soon cause maybe they can blow some hot air out of this area!

Oh my banjo, oh my banjo

The man who created this event and all events like it in your little town is from Coudersport. Get over it. Crank up that banjo, slam a case of Busch beer and go ride your atv's in the mud. You will forget all about it in the morning.

YOU ARE RIDICULOUS!! I hope that you do not come down this way to enjoy the Dam Show and especially do not come to the Bio-Blitz.

Just stick your head in the sand in Coudersport -- your jealous that you do not have the opportunities to have events at the most historic site within Potter County "Austin Dam Site".

Maybe we could get you a big pacifier to keep in that rambling mouth!!

Way to go Bio-Blitz! It is a great program and enjoyed by a lot of the school students.

Mr. Metzger is originally from Harrisburg A-Holes.

Mr. Metzger is originally from Potter County, but who cares besides Mr. Metzger, his mom and the rest of his family. Get a grip folks. Doing good things is doing good things! This is one of the more ridiculous threads I've read on here.
