If it was near to a Township Road, and posed a possible threat to the motorists, it may have been cut down by the road crew... I am not saying it was, and I don't even know where the picture was taken, but it is a possibility...
Looks suspiciously like a lightning strike.
How about you people take a closer look at the picture??? Anyone happen to notice that WOODPECKERS did this????? Yeah, woodpeckers... Good one...
Pilated woodpecker.
I believe it's from the woodpecker that's in the picture.
What you see in the picture is not a lightning strike... It is the workings of a rarely seen Pileated Woodpecker (seen in the photo at the bottom of his work)... These are very large woodpeckers that are amazing to watch, but they really tear up a tree when they put their mind to it...
Actually, the woodpecker is only extending the damage. This was originally cause by ice that was flung from a wind turbine blade 1/2 mile away.
This is really funny, makes you wonder how some can call others dumb.....
Actually I believe Sherry sent earlier pictures of this tree where she had been watching the woodpeckers. It sounds now like the entire tree has been cut down and she would like to know why. I think she only sent this picture to identify which tree she was talking about. Bird watching is an exciting hobby so her question is not dumb at all.
I believe that the very first comment probably addressed the question... If I am not wrong, that theory is probably supported by what appears to be a pile of dirty plowed snow at the bottom of the picture, indicating that it was more than likely right next to a road... The tree appears to be quite dead and with the damage that this little fellow was causing, it surely would have snapped and fallen into the road during the next high wind event, possibly onto a passing motorist, or directly in the path of one, causing a potentially hazardous situation... As fun as it is to watch these birds at work, it would me more prudent to protect the public, if this was the case...
Honestly, I don't believe it was going to fall. there are other trees that should be cut down to prevent from falling. this tree isn't rotted out it was carved out by the woodpecker. Just wondering if someone cut it down to study it or something along that line. and what the study would be. I was very suprised at how quickly he tore this tree up, and how BIG he was, lol.
Sherry
ps thank you to whoever said I was not Dumb.
Wow. A wind turbine blade a half mile away. That's a sensationalized opinion of an uneducated knuckle head, but nevertheless I find it hysterical!!!
Are you talking about the tree lying on the ground, or the dead one that has been destroyed by wood peckers?
Sorry my dumb mistake, i enlarged the picture & can see that it is a plowed snow bank. Does the tree look like it was cut by a chain saw, or did it fall over from just being dead, the wind ETC.
I think this is the same tree that my parents have been watching for months. I came back from Bradford a few days ago and it was cut down. It was pretty cool to see, but I don't know where it went either?
