By Andy Kulp

The To Fill A Backpack organization kicked off its 2009 fund raising campaign with a change drive at the Coudersport Elementary School. Students were asked to collect as much change as they could from family, friends and neighbors for one week.

The class that collected the most money would win a pizza party donated by Fox’s Pizza of Coudersport. Donations started coming in the form of change, bills, checks and supplies. Donations were collected daily by the Teachers in 29 classes and then delivered to the office for pickup.

At the end of the week, all of the loose change was taken to the 1st National Bank in Port Allegany to be counted. The totals were returned and added to the rolls of coins, bills, etc. to find out who the winning class was.

After all the counting was done, it was Mrs. Gentzyel’s class who won with a total collection of $198.44 (the class is shown in the picture with Mrs. Gentzyel, Town Coordinator Shiela Easton and Founder Andy Kulp).

The To Fill A Backpack organization would like to thank all the students and staff of the Coudersport elementary school for their participation and support.

Anyone who is interested in making a donation can mail it to the following address: To Fill A Backpack – 81 Burleson Avenue – Roulette, PA 16746 or call (814) 544-8032 to find out where you can drop off supply donations.

The program is hoping to be able to help children in Austin, Coudersport, Eldred, Galeton, Port Allegany, Shinglehouse, Smethport and other areas if we can reach out that far so we are going to need a lot of help.

Last year we helped over 250 children and with the way that the economy is I’m sure that we will be helping more. We will be supplying information later on how people can make arrangements to receive a free backpack if they need one.

The backpacks are usually distributed through local Churches, Food Banks, etc. We ask for no names of who receives the backpacks, only if it is a boy or girl and are they grade school or high school. To see what this organization is all about or to find out how you can help, check us out on the web at www.tofillabackpack.org, send us an email to info@tofillabackpack.org or give us a call at (814) 544-8032.

On May 2nd the Roulette Red Hatters (It’s All About Us – Mainly Me) held a benefit bake sale for the To Fill A Backpack program that helped raise $256.20. Thanks to all the Maple Festival people who purchased the bake sale items and/or made donations.

On September 13th the Red Hatters will be holding a benefit Spaghetti Dinner at the Hotel Crittenden in Coudersport, again to benefit the To Fill A Backpack program. Other fund raising events will be held throughout the summer months in preparation for the upcoming school year. Please donate to the program whenever possible…every little bit counts.

With your continued support we can send children to school with the supplies that they need.
