85 Employees Laid Off At Morgan AM&T Plant

Morgan AMT Cuts 85 Jobs
The Local 88612 Union website for Morgan AMT announced news of massive layoffs at the Coudersport Plant
.

This latest round of layoffs started last Friday and will continue on July 3rd. It has also been noted that all salaried employees must take a week off WITHOUT PAY, this being done on a rotating basis.

  • 36 Employees To start Temp Layoff. Beginning on 6/29/09 thru 7/3/09, Employees have been put on Temporary layoff in accordance with Article XX, Section 6.

  • 49 Employees Given Indefinite Layoff. Due to the lack of orders from Armorworks and the continued slowing of the Core business. Starting the week ending 6/26/09, approximately half of the 49 will begin their layoff. The remainder will start on 7/3/09.

On a more positive note, employee rumors are that some new orders are coming in and hopes are that business will pick back up soon for the company.

Dear God! What will be left for Coudersport families soon!

America voted for change.....

what will happen when our troops come home and we don't kneed "armor" ?

Anonymous said...

Well I guess people are just going to have to move to another country where all the jobs are going.

Anonymous said...

The same as other small towns, find another job.

Is Emperion still hiring? I've heard they have a great starting rate, which gets even better once you complete your training period.

Competitive starting rate of $8.25 per hour during the 30 day training period,

I heard Empereon is like a Nazi Concentration Camp....not that bad of course, but they have such a high turnover rate...

Are you kidding me 6:38? Yeah, everything was just great before the election. The recession, the 2 wars, the collapse of the auto market, the stock market plunge, Bernie Madoff, the bailout,...yeah they all happened that Tuesday in November. Give me a break. It took 8 years to create this mess and it's going to take a long time to fix it.

Anonymous said...

Yes it has taken a long time to build this mess we are in. Hey let me know how long the democrats were in power in the house and the senete. If you know anything you would know that they are the people who really control everything.Obama owns it now with all the spending he has done.

Anonymous said...

Huh, duh, I guess when our troops come home by way of Afghgan. you can worry then. Do you really think the military will never ever have needs? Grow up...The USA will always be needed.

10:53 If I know anything?? Other than the Senate in 01-02 the Republican Party controlled both houses of congress from 1995-2006. I would get my facts straight before I start that argument.

Anonymous said...

Go ahead and work for Empereon, you'll be glad there's a McDonalds to work at later.

Anonymous said...

MAybe the county ought to offer its stimulus plan to morgan as it did to kightlinger.

Anonymous said...

yeah we all could go to Empereon and make 1/3 of what we make at morgan.

Anonymous said...

Jim, Not looking good just did away with the 12 hours in Armor and swithced back to 8 hr work days. and transfered many more out of armor. looks like if business doesnt pick up in a week or so there will be another layoff.

George W Bush had the power to veto any spending bill in his eight years in office, check back and see He DID NOT VETO one spending bill, so blame Obama of course. Bush and his congress spent money like a bunch of democrats. So place the blame where it belongs, signed a pissed off republican

Anonymous said...

when did they get rid of 12 hours
this new to us

Anonymous said...

People that are used to making big money should also stash some away for these types of situations, or don't spend more than you can bring into your home. Nobody should "judge" anyone that works for another company even if they only make minimum wage. Trust me thanks to a few people who stuck their noses where they did not belong I have already been through it but was prepared for any type emergency situation. Now I see my former co workers (the ones that you could actual call a friend) suffering because of the outsourcing and free trade agreements---it sickens me, their whole lives are being turned upside down. We need to put an end to free trade agreements.

Anonymous said...

I totally agree with 1:51 and have been saying that since the county bailed out Kightlingers. There are more employees at Morgan than at Kightlingers.

Tom said...

They didnt get rid of the 12 hours, they transfered the people on 12 hours in 1 department to 8 hours for 2-3 weeks... Doesnt this site ever get info right?

Anonymous said...

what would you like the county to do for morgan? order a bunch of bullet proof vests!! how exactly do you think they can help?

Anonymous said...

All hail osama-bama All hail osama-bama it took a hell of alot longer than 8 years to get here !!!!Good old american greed from the small towns to the big cities!

Anonymous said...

Let's all apply at the Coudersport School for ma job. This ndew Super wants to give all a raise, as we afre losing our jobs. His salary could hire 4 people laid off. Get rid of Rick Toner now before he screws moret axpayers

workers wife said...

Well the only reason Kightlinger got bailed out is because of the name. Money helps money. Morgan deserves the help. But like you said, how do you help something that has a lot of government business? It's a no win situation either way you look at it. Is Coudy gonna bail out the other little places when they have problems too??? Doubt it. Depends on the name.

Anonymous said...

If the higher ups at Morgan AMT were doing what they were paid to do, they would have been looking for other work should something like this happen as a back up plan. Someone wasn't paying attention. This company was in business long before they started manufacturing body armor. Nothing lasts forever. There has to be something else this company can manufacture.

Tom said...

It does manufacture other things, bearing, seals, rocket nozzles, liquid pumps, vehicle armor... it has alot of really great people that are good at what they do. Business is business, this company always said they wouldnt build a business around armor and they havent. Do you know where Morgans head is? Windsor, England. They have plants all over the world. It just so happens that their armor plant is here in Coudy. Now if it picks up you will all say they are genius'

Anonymous said...

well i think they need to look at this more carefully . the older people that has been there more than 30 years . they should ask for the layoff they will get alot more from the unemployment than the list amount of year people . and they need to look at the numbers of the people that have worked there some time also . they let people get away with alot there walk around take extended breaks . produce low number of parts being ran

Anonymous said...

I have no problem with union shops, But there is a big void in them as well. As long as there is a union you will always have those people that do nothing cause quite frankly they don't have to. Its unfortunate they lay off several good workers cause they have to and keep a whole flock of lazy, whiny, people that have been there 20 plus year cause of seniority!

Anonymous said...

This is not true....unemployment is based on the persons pay rate and has nothing to do with time in service. Also, this is a union shop and it is based on seniority which prevents that.

Tom said...

Granted, but those people that are taking those extended breaks and producing low amounts of parts have to realize that they are not helping the company and really lose any right to gripe in a situation like this. I think youll find that they are the first ones to complain when something goes wrong though. Yeah, the management could do more to punish those people but then there are times when good hard working people get grief just because something isnt working out right. It goes both ways. People need to start having a conscience and working for their money, not just waiting to have everything handed to them.

Anonymous said...

Talk about not doing any thing. How about head of IUE? He does not do a thing. He did not even get the week shut down off.now he stans a aound doing not a thing. Herry takes care of him.

Anonymous said...

SOOOOOOO TRUE

Tom said...

Hey 11:48 poster... who is the head of IUE? Actually its some guy in Ohio... if you talking about the local president. Trust me, he and Harry arent as close as you think. Im sure you would be one of those people to rip on him while his back was turned but run to him asking for a favor when you needed it. If you even work at Morgan I bet you have never even been to a local meeting. You post as anonymous on here but sit home on meeting days and watch your nascar eating chittlin's and whine when something like this happens. Way to be involved. Come on now, lets hear who you are and prove me wrong.

former employee said...

Speaking of unions........Why must there be this super seniority when perhaps the quote group leader or union steward keeps his or her job when maybe someone with more skill or seniority is much more capable of performing the job in his or her dept. With employee numbers falling so low why must there be so.......many stewards and negotiators?

Tom Who???

How long are the media and the people in this country going to give obama a pass. Don't you think getting rid of income tax for six months would have done more for the economy than his stupid stimulas plan. All of you should be proud of the great change he has given us. And get ready people the worst is yet to come. Thank you people of the us for electing a idiot.Love the change and you all deserve what you get for voting for him.

Jeff Long said...

The situation is an unfortunate one, and the finger pointing and union bashing does not solve anything. The fact is the Employees of Pure Carbon voted the Union in back in March of 1990, and for the last 20 years the facility has grown and prospered to become a world wide competitor of its products due to the people who have been there 20 plus yrs. It is a shame that corporate greed has shifted production to lower cost countries. I have made this information available on our website in the past by notifying members of interim statements made by Morgan Crucible. The armor line was never intended as long term business and it looks like it has ran its course. If you cant read the writing on the wall, make an appointment with your eye doctor. And if you don't have the Chutzpah to post with your name, keep thoughts to yourself.

Rick Long said...

Sure Jeff...if that is really your name. Obviously you aren't bright enough to realize that anyone can post any name in this blog.

Ken Nellis said...

Well Rick it really was Jeff. I think that all the bashing of the union needs to stop. If the ones that like to bash the union had balls enough to stand up and do the job we would more than likely go to hell fast. The ones i have heard bashing Todd, Jeff, Dave, and Jerry need to take a set and shut the hell up. They are doing as much as they can, only because the ones that were in there before them sold us out and these are the ones you voted in so stand beside them and go to the meetings. For the ones that walk around and do nothing this is management's issue not the union's or the groupleader's. Some of you that talk about the issue's at Morgan sounds to me your just here to bitch you don't really understand what is going on. If you need help I have teaching aid's that may help you if needed flash card's, photos, and more just ask.

To the person who falsely posted as Rick Long at 11:44pm, I am bright enough to realize any one can post under any name. So i will make my point a little more blunt just for you. If you dont have the balls to post under "your" name, your comments are inconsequential and hold no value, kinda like your brain. Now if you would like to hear my views which aren't politically correct, give me a call, I would be happy to enlighten you.

Unions in america had their time when there was a need for them, but in this day and age it is just an abuse of the freedom of America to use a union to lobby for higher pay. In my opinion, it was the action of the labor unions that have brought our country down and force companies to send work ot of the nation.

jeff whats your number?? id like to hear your stories

You are so right!
The auto unions helped bury that industry.

Do you realize a min. of 1200.00 is tacked on to the price of each new vehicle you purchase to keep these retired auto workers in the bloated benefits they receive? Yes, bloated, you might not like the word but it is true!

Jeff Long said...

Bobby, thanx for your uneducated insight. I thought it would have been the likes of Enron, Adelphia, Bernie Maddoff, and excessive executive perks that brought this country down. Not us lower to middle class income earners. And speaking of lobbying check this site out.

Celebrating 232 years of independence and freedom this July 4th. Thanks to those thar made the choice to give us these rights for freedom of speech and religion we may voice our opions and concerns on this blog, yet we continue to argue and bicker. Regardless, we have to remember that we are ALL still in this country together and must stand together to keep our values and continue to support the values we believe in. I for one am not afraid to post my name. HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY to all of you.
