Carol Hyde Writes From Cross Fork.......

Jim,
You might want to add this to the PSP scams. My caller ID has had several strange numbers on it and I wonder if this was why. I had my identity stolen last year through my S.S. # but not this way.
Carol Hyde

P.S. I have the guts to sign my name to things I post. I'm glad you are being more careful about what you post. Freedom is speech is a right but only if we can identify who says it. People who do not sign their comments remind me of the KKK who wear hoods to disguise themselves, fearing someone might know who they are.

Jury Duty Scam

This has been verified by snopes and the FBI (their links are included below). Please pass this on to everyone in your email address book. It is spreading fast so be prepared should you get this call. Most of us take those summonses for jury duty seriously, but enough people skip out on their civic duty, that a new and ominous kind of fraud has surfaced.

The caller claims to be a jury coordinator. If you protest that you never received a summons for jury duty, the scammer asks you for your Social Security number and date of birth so he or she can verify the information and cancel the arrest warrant. Give out any of this information and bingo; your identity was just stolen.

The fraud has been reported so far in 11 states, including Oklahoma , Illinois , and Colorado . This (swindle) is particularly insidious because they use intimidation over the phone to try to bully people into giving information by pretending they are with the court system. The FBI and the federal court system have issued nationwide alerts on their web sites, warning consumers about the fraud.

Is the comment comparing anonymous posters to KKK members really necessary? It's plain tasteless and THAT should be the type of thing that is kept off this site.

I get a call about every other day to lower my interest rate on my credit cards.I don't have a credit card When I call the number that comes up on my ID it is not in service. How can that be?? How can they use a phone that is not in service?? I called the state police and they told me there is not muchI can do except not to answer. It comes up on ID as out of area. Today I got a call that said Florida . It was also a scam. I hate not to answer it because I have friends in Florida. It seems to me they could catch these people. Rachel is her name.

Rachel called me again today--something needs to be done with these scammers--If they didn't sucker people in, they would give it up. Where is the attorney general when you need him. Trashing the do not call law, and scamming people by getting their credit card information. PUBLIC ENEMY NO.1

The caller ID data is not tied in the phone system to the originating number.

In is simply an editable value on the switch placing the call. If this is your switch, you can make it say anything you want. It is /very/ easy to forge.

With that said, it is pretty sad that the "your auto warranty is about to expire" and the "this is your last chance to lower your interest rate" people were able to call nearly every person in the country several times over periods of months before anyone stepped in to do anything about it.

It is sad that if you are caught selling small amounts of marijuana from your home, the man can take your home, but these criminals build empires on fraud (US fidelis) and get a slap on the wrist at best.

I informed "Rachel" to put me on her no call list and to never call again.

I am sure it will do no good and shortly the calls will start again!

I told Rachel the same thing but she is still calling.

i receive these "Rachel" calls every day or so--have had at least 6 calls. can anything be done to stop them?
