Commenter's Comment Is Right On.........New Comment Policy Announced

Comment Of The Day

Would you naysayers just shut up! I have never in my life witnessed a more vindictive, nosey, can't be happy unless I make someone else miserable bunch of people in my life!!! God, If you folks that jump to criticize were half as good as you think you are you would be twice as good as you actually are.
Jeez... Now you got me doing it...

Constructive, non-critical, positive, informative, helpful and entertaining comments will be posted at our discretion. Dildines too, get rid of the dildine comments.

Horrible idea. If you're going to censor our opinions then I will no longer visit your blog.

Keep up the good work Jim! :-)

Critisize the War and you're unpatriotic and a traitor. Critisize George Bush and the same is true....critisize Jim Steiner and Solomon's Words changes their comment policy.

Shame on you Jim! Our freedom to speak freely is what made this country! Who are any of you to decide what is offensive or critical and what is not? It's no wonder TV stars, celebrities, and policticians get away with what they do...the public just tells us to shut up when we speak out against injustices!

I say again, SHAME ON YOU JIM!

Anonymous said...

Hate to say it Jim, but i don't think people were being terribly vindictive when writing comments about the bear pic, the first thing that came to my mind is that it is illegal to feed bears.

In 2003, a regulation prohibiting the feeding of bears went into effect. The regulation made it unlawful to intentionally "lay or place food, fruit, hay, grain, chemical, salt or other minerals that may cause bears to congregate or habituate an area." The exceptions to this regulation are "normal or accepted farming, habitat management practices, oil and gas drilling, mining, forest management activities or other legitimate commercial or industrial practices."

The regulation enables Game Commission Wildlife Conservation Officers (WCOs) to issue written notices that direct landowners to discontinue other forms of wildlife feeding, even if not intended for bears, if the feeding is attracting bears to the area and causing problems with bears in the neighborhood.

The intent of this regulation is to reduce human-bear conflicts, not to put a stop to other wildlife feeding or songbird feeding. However, the regulation enables Game Commission WCOs to issue written notices that direct landowners to discontinue songbird and/or other wildlife feeding if bears are being attracted to the area and causing a nuisance for property owners or neighbors.

Apparently you have forgotten what made your blog...the people that read it, because without the viewers (who like to express their honest opinion)you wouldn't have advertisements.

Anonymous said...

What's the point of having a "blog" then?

Anonymous said...

I would just stop posting comments all together instead of trying to censor them. Just make it more of an informational site and report the news and local happenings.

Anonymous said...

A little editorial discretion goes a long way..

Jim, Maybe you should have censored the commentary of the person who posted the picture and you wouldn't have all those comments.

Although the comments I read really weren't nasty.

Anonymous said...

I don't see the need to sensor.

I'm a big boy. I read what I choose and ignore what I choose.

Think about it ...

If negative commnents caused the same stir, We'd never get to watch high school sports or little league either.

Just ignore them.
They'll get bored and move on.

The new policy sounds like a good one to me. I'll definitely keep reading it.

The whole idea behind a blog is for information and entertainment. The news is the information, the comments for the most part, are the entertainment. I think that only the most ignorant, vile and stupid comments, along with those that are personal attacks on other posters should not be published. If you stop all comments, you will lose a big part of what makes your blog successful-readers and advertisers.

Millstream Inn

Anonymous said...

Exactly.. if you are planning on disabling or sensoring the "comment" feature on your blog..then you are altogether changing the genre of your site, and will have to advertise it as such. I second this:

"I would just stop posting comments all together instead of trying to censor them. Just make it more of an informational site and report the news and local happenings."

Anonymous said...

I agree, you should include all comments. Freedom of speech. It is also a very good way of gauging public opinion on various issues. Please don't cut the negative comments. That's what the news does, only reports what they think people want to see/hear. I only wish that these people, who are obviously very opinionated, would speak out more in public and contribute to our society, rather than saying it "anonymously".

And please do NOT get rid of the dildine comments! They are meant soley for fun/humor, and cause no harm whatsoever!

Anonymous said...

it's a blog site. anyone can set one up for free. we can make a 'bitchin' blog site' and leave comments there. if jim wants to keep his blog clean let's respect that .

This is nothing new! Jim has been censoring comments from the beginning. Over the past year, has not posted at least 3 of my comments which were relevant, and reflected my OPINION on the topic! Hence a blog... hmmmmm..

Anonymous said...

You can censor comments if you like, but I for one, would not "donate" to a site where my opinion may or may not be able to be viewed based on the opinion of the site administrator.

Anonymous said...

I'll read it more with the new policy.

Comments don't have the first thing to do with why I visit this site numerous times per day. I read the entries because it's the best source for news as it happens. Our local papers are fine but if you want to know what's going on NOW, you go to Solomon's. It's not like we have a local tv station or anything. Do you people talk back to your newspaper or the radio? Opinions are fine but rude, degrading, off topic comments have no place here or anywhere else for that matter. In fact, if you must know, there's another news blog that features local news and hardly anyone makes comments. I wonder why. Keep up the great work Jim!

Anonymous said...

We're not questioning Jim's Administrative authority on his blog. We are saying that censorship is wrong. If I want biased one-sided news I'll read the Potter Leader and watch Fox & CNBC and go back to posting comments on other blogs. Unless comments are very derogatory, slanderous, or illegal, you should not censor them Jim. This is what we are asking from you as your viewers. We respect your authority, but are asking that you do not degrade your blog with one-side information like almost every other source of news in this country. Seriously everyone, just STOP and think for just a moment. CLEAR you head, and toss out all misconceptions and prejudices you have and try to see things from the OTHER perspective for just once! Our country is/was a great nation because we COULD speak our minds, we could agree to disagree, debate the subjects and then make standing decisions/rules/laws based on majority opinion. This doesn't mean that we no longer listen to the minority opinion, or respect it, or ever WORSE...CENSOR IT! I don't like half of what I read here, that doesn't mean that I'm going to take offense to it and tell that person they have no right to speak their mind.
Jim, you have the power to censor your blog...but by doing so, you empower the fascist element that runs rampant throughout all of our media.

Freedom of speech is bound to piss a few off that is the idea. If we all walked on egg shells trying not to hurt peoples feelings then we as people would never learn anything. I love to hear what people think and ponder on the things people say. Some may be wise and others are just fools that need to hear more opinions and maybe just maybe think about the situation and LEARN.
Please let us see all opinions even if it is just foolish.

Thank you for the time you put into this blog. We all need a soapbox. You are just the middleman. That puts you in a uncomfortable place but I know the thoughts and views posted by your readers are not your views.

Anonymous said...

WOW. What is this all about? We all know the blog comment approval settings are on, we know they have to be approved by the blog owner. The site users should all be decent enough about their comments, but if their not then censor them!! I'm sure it has always been that way with you Jim. So why all the drama about this? Not necessary!!! I personally enjoy reading all the comments, especially the very opinionated ones. Sometimes they are annoying and even uninformed but every one has a right to express their opinions in this type of blog setting.

Jim,

As I have always said, you do a great service with this site. Information-only blogs do exist but the ability for readers to post comments is what makes a great blog. You'll always have negative comments, you'll always have bickering, and you'll always have political debates. If it is too much for you to censor completely idiotic comments...then just disable them completely. By the comments of some this may be hard to believe but we're not children. So, stop with the threats and just do away with them. I have thick skin and can take negative comments...I realize others cannot. It would be sad to see them go but it's better than reading only "happy sunshine" comments. Even good people are frustated at times and have opinions that others will disagree with. It's utterly ignorant to administer a news blog and think that there won't be negative comments. However, a blog is not a democracy, it's yours to dictate, and if you want to run it like Taliban that is your choice. No matter what you choose to do...as long as you keep posting local news there'll be people who take advantage of it. In the future, I for one, will be back to read all the God-fearing, politically correct, happy, and shiny comments. I always love a good fairytale.

Anonymous said...

why not just have a rule that you have to sign your name to have it posted. Iam sure that would stop alot of the people who like to write the nasty and neg. stuff most people dont have the guts to stand behind what they say when you know who they are

Anonymous said...

Thank you! I agree that in the last couple months the comments have been disrespectful and not needed. There is never a need to be mean and nasty. I think this blog will be more respected and viewed more frequently with a more positive approach. If you want freedon of speech, write to the newspaper where you have to give your name in order to be published.

I apologize in advance for my ignorance, lol.... what is "dildine"?

Anonymous said...

Jim: Your policy is very commendable. I will read it more and so will many other people I know because they will not feel like "dark side" tone that has pervaded this service. Due to the anonymous option, many people have enjoyed the ability to control a public dialogue and make somebody look sinister or stupid without giving the latter any chance to confront his accuser.
You own this service and the news function alone, regardless of the comments, will keep it very popular.
You are exercising discretion that is yours and yours alone and many of us in the silent majority here commend you for taking this action.
And keep the dilldine on the vine or whatever it is. That's just harmless silly fun and it was on national TV during the World Series putting us on the map.

I agree with Wed, June 10, 12:58pm. Just do what you have been doing Jim... censor those blogs that demonstrate stupidity... as in the sample you have shown. There is nothing respectful or informational about it. It is a free country. Release the irresponsible bloggers to go to an irresponsible site and spew their poison.

whatever the solution, it's your blog, do what you choose.

Anonymous said...

This isn't surprising, I've made a few comments on the Jim Steiner post that weren't negative in any way and they were censored by Mr. Jones. I'll still read, but no chance I donate. The comments are 90% of the reason I read this site.

Cynthia Jones said...

Well I am going to sign my name to this comment...it is Cynthia Jones. You have no idea of the time and work involved keeping this site up to date with the news local events etc. My husband is aware that the readers of the site like the comment option but before you hang him out to dry...think how would you handle all the different comments some are so terrible it is hard to believe that a human being wrote them and believe me they never hit the site. The nasty ones you see are the mild ones. Now what if it is you or a close family member that makes the news, has an idea, runs a benefit etc...how would you feel about the really negative comments? There are nights when Jim is on this computer for 12+ hours trying to keep the community aware of what is going on in their backyard. I agree that we should have freedom of speech and so does Jim...so add your name, first and last if you have something to say. If you don't want anyone to know that you said it don't say it. If you fear that you would be sued or worse maybe you should think about what you are saying. We understand the pros and cons comments and Jim tries to be as fair as possible with the ones he posts to the site
however the ones that are just vicious have no place on this site. Jim cares so much about this community and the people and just wanted to make a site where people could read the news as it happens not next week..give people a place to put a picture of a child who has won an award, a white robin, yard sale, church event and the obituaries in a timely ,manner for everyone. What happens next will be up to Jim and he is torn as to what to do he has always like the comment option but it has gotten very ugly lately. I know you will say I am his wife and that is why I am defending him and you would be half right I also told him that I think he should leave the comments on..keep monitoring them..and try not to take them to heart. Have any of you said something you wanted to take back, made a mistake, wish you could change something in your life, or have a skeleton or two in your closet? Well I will get off my soap box for now and I hope I have given all of you food for thought.

Anonymous said...

Having studied this issue since your blog began to gain readers, I think I can safely say the solution is simple as stated above: require that the comments be signed. Does your provider of this service allow that?
And KEEP THE DILDINE. Everyone in our break room howls every time we find that in a posting. I about peed my pants when I saw the dildine banner at the Maple Festival on the gazebo.

Anonymous said...

My 2 cents, not that it matters, but....by censoring, youre going to miss out on some valuable posts. Not everyone has the ability to keep their thoughts clean. Sometimes those thoughts are hurtfull to others. Those comments do no harm. Matter of fact they do the opposite. They build a thick skin. Something VERY valuable in life. If comments in a simple blog from a small town bother you, you would not last a second in the "real world". Ultimately its up to Jim. Do we let the readers hear from others on a subject? Or do we let Jim decide what youll think about a subject? As disappointing as it is, seems Jim has already decided how youll read, and comprehend your news. Small town news blog censorship....whats next? MSM censorship?? Oh thats right, they already do.

Anonymous said...

First of all Jim~ I would visit your site even more without the comments. I have been a victim of your comments and know how hurtful they can be. I haven't left a comment since that happened to me and barely read them either. Either people sign them like a Letter to the Editor or leave them off. I think some are way out of hand...what is it going to take... Honestly I enjoy the news and not the ignorant people adding to the news. Your a newsman and that is what I appreciate!

Anonymous said...

"Those comments do no harm."
How can you say that?
Whoever you are at 3:14, you are way way off-base on that.
The writers who say it is time to require comments to be signed, you have hit the nail on the head.
But I still think the nastier comments or slandorous comments should be censored by the person who has taken so much of his own time to start and operate this service.
Jim you have my full support.

Anonymous said...

If having the blog is as difficult and time consuming as Mrs. Jones states, and I'm sure it is, Jim has 2 choices.....no longer publish ANY comments, or end the site. Pretty simple.

Anonymous said...

Anonymous postings allow some of us to post our view without fear of retribution at our work place.

Anonymous said...

""Those comments do no harm."

Oh really? Hmmm, well let me ask you this. Do you think that because Jim censors those comments, that people arent thinking..even talking about those exact comments? Those comments posted here, actually came from a REAL person. Imagine that. By censoring comments on here, youre losing the, sometimes only, chance you have at setting the record straight. Just because you do not read it here, doesnt mean its not said, thought, or written somewhere else. Look, I dont live in Potter. Im an outsider. Like I said in my previous post, my opinion doesnt matter. But think about what censorship does, in all capacities. Give yourselves the chance to correct the many wrongs that you will not be able to read.

People will just create false names if they have to post a name or worse yet, sign the comment with the name of someone they don't like. I say do away with the comments and just post the local news.

I think the first step would be to make all commenters sign in and not allow the anonymous option. Then we know who are the one saying the nasty things on here.

Come on! who would make a idiotic comment and then use their "real" name?

I want to start by saying that I support the right to free speech.

With that said, I also feel that users that post anonymously are being cowards. If you feel strongly enough about your opinion, and believe that you are truly correct, and are not posting a comment just for the sake of being obnoxious or rude, why shouldn't you also not put a name with it.

Back to the freedom of speech deal, this website is not owned by a government organization. It is a privately owned blog and the Administrator can set policies as he feels necessary. While your opinions that he shouldn't moderate rude comments is valid, it is just that, an opinion.

I don't see how freedom of speech is being impeded, rather some user's freedom to be nasty and mean, are being impeded and that is an asinine idea to pursue.

I am not sure how nasty some of these have gotten, but would guess they were left out.As for anyone who wishes to post their opinion about someone that has become a public figure;(You are in the news after all)Who cares? It is either posted here, blabbed about at the coffee shop or discussed everywhere people gather. The last time I checked, around here when they quit talking about you, it is time to check the obits to see if you are there and didn't know it! The comment section of this blog is great.Use your mind to sort out what is relevant and what is garbage. That is why you have one.Do you need someone to sort it out for you?Is their opinion on what is or isn't relevant the same as yours?Suck it up people,if you don't like the comment section don't click on it!

Its funny how the nasty small minded and cowardly people are getting all bent out of shape because they may not be able to keep taking their shots at people without having to own up to their comments.

This site should do that too.
I do not know how to sign on here as a user because I do not have a Google account but my name is Mike Anderson and I use to work at Adelphia and then moved away because there was no jobs.

As a matter of fact, my name is Terry Wankel, and many people linked to Bradford are aware of who "Tez" (my pseudonym) is.
I apologize for not realizing that I needed specifics. I'm not really sure why everyone is so up in arms about all of this. Honestly, it takes a lot of time to put all of this together. The admin here spends at least 12 hours every day coming up with this content. For those who want to just wait for the paper, or find the news in other venues because they can't make nasty comments, I have the following statement. Good luck in finding all this news in one place without having to search all over the internet or purchasing 3-4 newspapers.

Great decision to show some civility here Jim.
We saw from the terrible way the Steiner family's travails were trotted out here for all to see, this forum has the potential to hurt people in so many ways.
I agree with posters who say an email address and name should be required to post a comment.
But you own this and you have the right to do whatever you want.
I know you are a Believer and so I know you will do what is right.
To all those who had such a good time throwing poison at people and hiding here I hope you enjoyed the ride. That ugly chapter of our history has been closed and we are moving on with some dignity and respect.

The new policy sounds good to me. If you have to get your negative comment fix, you can get it somewhere else.

Brenda said...

I think a lot of people who have responded so far have somewhat missed the point. The "comment of the day" is directed towards the people making the comments and I think it extends to those hateful attitudes beyond this site. My point is that there is so much concern about the community posted on this site, so much talk of preserving it and saving it from those who would spoil it. I would postulate that it is not only the resources that are in danger...Potter County's spirit as embodied by many of her residents is rotting from within. The young people will continue to move away from the closed mindedness, the anger and the bitterness and find somewhere that has a spirit of community instead of one where everyone is always throwing rocks at one another. Those that stay will be poisoned by the same hateful attitude displayed by the adults and like a festering wound it will just get uglier. Community is about people--and I wouldn't join the Potter County community if the only thing I saw were the ugly hateful words posted in the comments section of this blog. It's sad that as I young adult I find myself turning in disgust from the childish behavior and immature words the are flung so thoughtlessly. Where are the wonderful friendly outgoing people whose paths we cross in town? Where are the ones who would pull over to help someone without knowing anything about that person? Where's that cheerful smile after a good honest hard day's work? Where is that outgoing country spirit that treats our neighbor as ourselves? How about instead of focusing on being "censored", which is really just a scary word to make people react, we think for just a moment about the fact that words do matter. Hateful words reflect on the community as a whole. God forbid a potential new resident or a visitor or tourist stumble upon this site with all the daily hateful and judgmental comments--they would surely steer clear of a place where the inhabitants are so eager to cut another's legs out from under them. Jim, keep it clean for the benefit of everyone. Thank you for the time and effort you put into keeping us up to date--whether we agree or not!

Michael said...

Jim,
I suggest you disable the comments and just make it a news site. Censoring is a really bad idea and considering your profession it seems unthinkable. I would rather have it go away than have you deciding who's opinions are worth sharing.

You seem to apply the first amendment to your right to post news. After all, the whole Jim Steiner saga spurred over 200 emails about how his life is ruined yet you are the one who posted the story. I live out-of-town and would never have even known about it if it wasn't for you.

I'm sure under your new policy this won't get posted but that's okay. It's really for you anyway.

I find it really sad that grown, educated adults, are acting this way because someone wants to keep their blog clean.

If this were any other business, that wasn't web based, we wouldn't even be having this discussion. This is the Admin's place of business. You wouldn't expect to walk into a barber shop and see mean/slanderous/nasty comments on signs on the wall. You would expect to see a boyscout sign advertising recycling pick up, but not the venomous posts that some of you users have proven to be the only types of posts that you can put on here.

Also, this is a free site, none of you pay anything to see all of this content, and none of you are paying to have your opinions posted here. If you paid a premium to enter this site, I could see everyone getting so vehement about the subject.

Again, this is the admin's business place, and just like any other business owner, it is his sole discretion at what gets posted here.

Finneus J Dildine said...

I personally think that this site would be a waste and would soon dwindle down in web hits if there were no ability to make comments. It would also no longer be a blog sight and would become a new site then....of which there are many. Also, it is my right to sign my comments in any way I see fit and with any name that I feel like using.

Anonymous said...

This is a small scale news aggregator site, I'm sure the overwhelming majority of hits come from the comment feature and things related to it, i.e. people simply reading them, leaving them, and/or checking back to see others responses. This site has always been subject to comment approval at the discretion of the owner with no clear cut published policy on such, which is his right, and he can probably continue this practice and stay in business because the site serves a tiny audience unlike much larger interactive aggergators like The Drudge Report or The Huffington Post, etc.. Aggreation sites are booming, some because they offer a compilation of news or other material in one place (usually selected to reflect a certain slant on any given issue to attract readers of a particualar persuasion), and others (small, local sites) owe their success to interation features like comments since the selected news stories are 99% local. Threatening to "turn off" the comment feature would drastically reduce traffic to this site, and tehrefore ad revenue and the owner(s) is well aware of it...I would hope anyway... Keep in mind your comments are suject to approval, as are all that are written, with no solid guidelines except for those in the mind of the owner, which should be shared with the rest of us before a war of words breaks out about the related sub-issues and specualtion about what the rules really are.

I second Finneus!!

great idea to make a policy. pretty sad when comments are left under a subject that has nothing to do with the comment being made. this is a great informational site; would be even better without the comments

Your blog is on a Google server. Read the first sentence.

Blogger Policy

Stop censoring or don't allow any is my opinion. Then let the cards fall where they may.

Tez said...

8:43.. that sentence is intended for the owner of the blog. Not you. If you want all comments allowed, no matter how stupid or irrelevant, start your own blog. Obviously everyone that is against the policy of Solomon's Words is bright enough to do this themselves, so have at it.

8:13.. Hits don't come from comments. Comments aren't even indexed by the search engines. I run a site similar to this and the majority of site hits come from direct links on other pages and people entering the actual address in the address bar. The Admin here could turn off commenting altogether and he'd lose maybe 10 hits per day. But, he would gain 30 more from the people who don't visit the site because of the rubbish that people that believe that they own the internet leave all over the place.

If you don't like the policy, don't visit. It is the Admin's right to post what he feels or doesn't feel like posting. For all of you crying "Freedom of speech", how about the admins freedom of speech and expression? Your right to crap up his blog is more important than him being able to run a respectable news site?
Get over it already!!!

Anonymous said...

"which is his right..." (did you miss that part?) "people entering the actual address in the address bar" People have to go to the address to access the comments on each and any/every story that's linked to..or even see that the story exists and therefore comments...hence...hm....a hit???

Anonymous said...

"If you don't like the policy, don't visit." What policy?? "It is the Admin's right to post what he feels or doesn't feel like posting." Is that the policy?? Professional and specific, nice. Alot or all of this bickering could be prevented if you had an actual set of guidelines for comments, of your course the specifics are entirely at the owner's discretion, but if published and understood, there wouldn't be grounds for griping about comments being published or not. If people don't like your standards, they don't have to read or post, but at least the standards would be visible. Seems like it would make things easier on the mod. too. IMHO of course....

You are really confused...If you don't like the comments section, why do you and those like you that are opposed to it, keep clicking on it and blogging on it???
If all you want is the news, then lay off the comments and save your "I am above everyone else that is using the comments section" by what? Not using it?
Turns out you like to express your opinion just like everyone else. And guess what?I don't think you should write such harsh comments about those that disagree with you.---Do you get it yet?---

It shouldnt be up to Jim Jones to have to pick and choose what to post, it should be up to the individual leaving the comment to have enough respect for yourselves them to show your true selves by disrespecting the web site with your senceless comments and stupidity. This is a free web site that Jim has taken upon himself to provide for the community as well as others elsewhere. So grow up and take on the responsiblities of an adult. If you want to chat back and forth with each other in his comments then try Yahoo IM!!!!
Use your own judgement Jim and if they dont like it let them leave, you dont owe them anything..

"For all of you crying "Freedom of speech", how about the admins freedom of speech and expression? Your right to crap up his blog is more important than him being able to run a respectable news site?"

I don't believe the comments are doing anything to the admins freedom or speech and expression. He is free to post what he wants on his blog.

Comments do not appear on the main page and you have to intentionally click through to see them. So if a reader can't stand to see what people think on a topic they don't have to click through or read all the comments if they don't like where things are going.

I think a respectable news site wouldn't censor comments if they had a comments section. No matter what the comments is it is a part of the thoughts out there.

Ultimately he has the power to do what he wants on this blog but I don't think that people shouldn't be able to voice their uncensored opinion if a comment system is in place.

I feel comments need posting only if the pertains to the article that its linked to. I personally am tired of the running back and forth between one persons oppinion and anothers, and the swearing isnt needed or what one person would do to another if had a chance. GROW UP PEOPLE. Its you all that posts this senceless behavior that is the cause..

Your doing a GREAT job dad!! I think comments are fun to read and leave when they are appropriate, so I hope you don't end them, but on the thought of censorship....I believe you have every right. Every site you go on(like myspace) censors what pics you can have. No nude or crude....so why shouldn't you be able to do the same with some of the ignorance that is spewed on here! I believe you will keep, if not gain fanfare, so just keep going with what your doing..Besides at least you know you'll be able to sleep at night.

If someone leaves and ignorant, blatantly rude comment, ignore it, or choose to attemt to engage in a civil debate with them, it's not rocket science. Obviously threatening, lewd, and otherwise clearly unacceptable comments should not be posted, but if a comment is simply contrary to your own opinion (situations like this should spark healthy discussion and debate), or ignorant in your eyes, ignore it, it's up to the individual whether to futher engage alot of the posters who have posted questionable comments. There's no need to get into a fray if one chooses not to, and if one wants to respond to a comment and start a discussion it's their peragative. Also, as the above poster stated, if you don't like the comments, don't read them or engage in discussion by posting.

9:45-- Yet another great example of why it is the admins discretion as to what gets on here. You seem to have read about 2 lines of my comment and you went off into a rant that made no sense whatsoever to the point originally made. It's silly to argue on here while hiding under the "anonymous" mask. If you have a problem with me, you're welcome to argue that point on yahoo IM: terry_wankel or through email tez@bradfordpa.info
I will be glad to argue whether I stated I was "above" everyone or not there.

One time I hired a monkey to take notes for me in class. I just sat there all week with my mind a complete blank while the monkey scribbled on little pieces of paper. On Friday, the teacher said,"OK class we're going to take a test using our notes." So I wrote a paper that said, "hello my name is bingo, can I have a banana? eek eek. I got an F. When I went home and rold my mom, she said," I told you, never trust a monkey." The end

Just wondering, I disagreed with an article about the anti bullying program in schools being successful and posted a comment disagreeing. I did not sign my name to it because I did not want my children to be hassled over it. I did appreciate hearing from other parents that felt the same way. Since my comment was negative towards the the article does that mean that my comment would not be posted?

Solomon's words for the wise said...

Your comment about the bullying is the type of comment that leads to solving these type of problems. No-one knows better than the parent of a child that is being bullied. The experts can say what the want, but they are not in the middle of a situation. Your comment was very valuable.

Jim, thank you very much for responding to my question. I really enjoy your site and visit it many times a day. I do like to hear both sides of the comments. I do not think that swearing or name calling are appropriate. Unfortunately when an article is about a person people will want to post their opinion of the person. This is going to happen. The only thing you can do is do what you have been doing and not allow the outright nasty comments. I know Jim Stiener and his family. There were a lot of bad comments. But I have no idea if he is guilty or innocent. The comments, both negative and positive, gave me a lot to think about. So please just keep doing what you have been doing. As I stated before I signed my comment anonymous so that my children would not be hassled for my comments. This allowed me to hear from other anonymous parents speaking up for and protecting their children.

If you don't want to read the comments, don't click on the comments link. It is that simple.

The comment section is viewed by choice. You have to find it at the end of the entry and view it. If uou don't want the comments DON'T LOOK AT THEM. I like them.

Why not, instead of censoring / deleting comments, just require that they create a validated account that show their true identity. I would bet that if these naysayers had to reveal their true identities that they would think twice about their comments.
If you have nothing to hide, then don't.

Don't worry fellow bloggers. I have noticed that this happens every several months when Jim gets a lot of comments on a controversial post. It will blow over like it has before and everything will be back to normal soon.

Anonymous said...

If you want to stop some of the bad posts. Just require people to enter a username and not be able to post anonymous... People would be less likely to run their mouths about something they don't have a clue about if their name was associated w/ the post.

Anonymous said...

Way to go Jim. I don't send a lot of information to this site anymore because of the nonsense that has been allowed to be posted. I think it will make it a better site if people can get in a discussion without all of the mis-information.

Anonymous said...

Jim - If you take away the comments you'll need to go buy a new domain name. Something like Solomonsopinion.com or something because this isn't a blog without our comments, good or bad.

Comments about comments .... I love it !

Pretty Momma said...

I have a blog myself (not a community news one, like you have, obviously) and I learned the hard way: don't accept annonymous comments. People are far less daring when they can't hide behind the screen.

Also, if people are out control and violating Google's TOS, you can contact Google and they will warn them/delete them.

Either that, or disable comments completely. This really is a news site. To me, it won't change the frequency I read by any means. I come here for up to the minute news, which I always receive.

Thank you.

Jim,

It's your site do as you please, I will still read it. I do like to read the comments even though some are over the top. Personally I would censor certain comments that bring nothing to the table. Thanks Jim for all of your hard work you put into this site.

"My rights, my rights..."your rights end when they infringe on the right of others. There are laws against libel and slander. Many of the comments on here at times would fall into those catagories. I believe that Mr. Jones would happily post posts that are constructive with facts and opinions that are related to the story, not ones personal opinion on the people involved. Attacking folks with venom is not the purpose here, it is to inform and give a forum for opinions to be expressed in an intelligent and thoughtful manor. Anything else does not need to be posted. Go Jim, you do a wonderful job! I do not think that this is blocking freedom of speech, it is ensuring comments that are not libel. Besides, it is his blog site which many of us are thankful for, if not happy with his rules, make your own gossip column!

You same people who are all screaming about Jim Steiner's family being drug through the mud are the sames who watch the news on tv...sure you don't mind it when Britanny Spears or some other person is drug through the mud huh? Only difference here is that you know the person.

No Jim you are not required to protect our freedom of speech, this is a private blog...however, a provider of good, accurate, and fair news will allow all viewpoints regardless of whether or not it offends anyone!

I get a vote too?
Vote One: Require that people sign their comments. Remove the cancer on our community that is the anonymous assault of peoples characters.
Vote Two: Do not censor the dildine. Let the little kids have their fun with banners and silly comments but now they will have to own up to them.
May the dildine with you and good night.

Yes I am signing in anonymous as usual, however, I'm not one of the people who leave horrible comments!

I just wanted to say, I love the comments section! I do think that people abuse it however.

I love your website and check it a few times every day! and the things you put on here are not only news but often very honorable stories, to me: a great example was my dad's firetruck ride. (Guess that may give away my identitiy to some :P)

Keep up the good work and I support whatever decision you make with your comments!!

Read the posts on the above articles above. I don't know Jim personally; I have not had the pleasure of meeting him. he does a boatload of work to provide us the news. Let's respect his decision to get the comments under control.

Jim-

You do a great job with this site. I wholeheartedly believe that people will continue to read it if you use much more discretion with the comments.

Constructive dialogue about issues is good and healthy for our community. Personal attacks and/or gossip is not.

Even though I don't know you personally I feel weird about posting this to you for all of your readers to see.

I'm glad I'm not in your shoes. You've created a great service for our community. My suggestion is to keep comments to the issues and not individual people and I think your site will do well.

A concerned reader

Jim,

as always, your blog - your choice. Your judgement has worked well for this blog.

As for the negative comments, it just makes me want to turn my focus to a more positive life.

Anonymous said...

i hope there are other things that want you to live a more positive life. a preponderance of negative and/or hurtful posts don't help anyone. This is a good change. Let's keep the posts to the issues and not hurting individuals. Issues are fair game, dragging individuals through the mud really doesn't help us.

God bless you Jim for having the will to stop the poison that has sometimes been carried by your worthy creation here.
You are its shepherd and you are sincerely concerned about your fellow man.
I hope that you are able to enjoy some financial return on the investment of your time and talents.

Most of you sound like Socialists to me...censor censor censor, "what you're saying is hurting my feelings". No doubt you all know what's best for me, and you should have the power to decide what I should read and what I shouldn't. Just like Bush's first term, it'll take time, but you will all see your mistakes with time. Lets just pray that it isn't too late. Good to see you have more "time" on your hands Tim M. lol it all comes out in the end

Jim...i think you need to put a filter on the site that filters out all of the thin skinned people that seem to be on here lately. Either that or you people need to come out of your shells and step into the real world. The world is full of disappointments and hurt feelings. Such is life!! If you are truly upset about what some anonymous person says about a news article, then you need to just shut off your computer and back away slowly.....

Solomon's words for the wise said...

Good advice, unless the person they happen to be trashing is you. Chances are you would be singing a different song if that were the case.

Anonymous said...

I agree with you Jess!Keep doin what you're doin Dad!Weed out the personal attacks and the profanity and let the uncivilized people vent somewhere else! Thanks for your time and devotion!! Brad

Mr Realistic said...

Jim...they can trash me all that they want!! I'm a big boy and can handle anything that people post. It's not like the people know me or I know them. I will give the trashy people the recognition that they are due......none. I don't see what the big deal is about letting people make comments about how they feel about the current post or about how they feel about other people comments. This is called "communicating" in laymens terms. Some people can handle communicating with others and then some get upset. I think you do a great job about filtering out the posts that are not appropriate...in fact you have filtered several that I have submitted in the past, but I understand why and don't blame you at all. Keep up the good work with your blog...there are many people that appreciate what you provide for the community.

Thanks!!!!

Anonymous said...

Mr. Realistic, that's the problem: "It's not like the people know me or I know them." If people knew who you where, you would'nt feel so entitled to spout off, same thing with them. Filtering isn't the answer, Censoring isn't the answer, just make people sign in to all of their post via name and email!!

Anonymous said...

As I look at all the 100+ comments here, 99% of them are anonymous. Imagine that!! Even newspaper editorials require people sign their names. That's not censorship, it's responsible publishing. Making people sign their names for all to see gives people pause to post falsehoods, rumors, vindictive paybacks, or words that may expose them to the legalities of spouting off venom to injure or hurt people. Good job Jim. I love this website for its up to the minute news. You sacrifice a lot of your time to inform the rest of us. Please continue to censor the hateful, spiteful, and stupid nonsense that some people post. ~ Faithful Reader & Supporter.

Make them pay to have an email and name for this site!! (registered user) Nobody's gonna get a second email, name and pay another fee just so they can leave their stupid comments. People buy the paper every week, only to see that they've already read the cover story's on here, I think that Jim deserves some compensation for his work. I for one would pay to be allowed to posts comments on here.

Mr Realistic said...

I would.....

Yea, pay to have a comment posted onto a free website .. Makes perfect sense ..

Yea!! Thats the answer!!If you want to post a really stupid unsubtantiated comment that slanders someone;sign your real name and send a $500 donation to help the blog owner pay for a lawyer!!Problem solved!! Brad
