Trooper David Burd, Cadet Elizabeth Burd, Wendy Burd

Elizabeth Burd Chosen Honor Cadet

By Robin Freeman

Northern Tier Camp Cadet was held June 22 through the 26th at Mansfield University. Of the 71 Cadets that graduated on Friday evening, 19 of them were from Potter County.

Also representing Potter County were 3 High School Seniors doing their senior projects, they were, Sydnee Jeffers & Kelsi Erway from Northern Potter & Michael Murray from Galeton School.

Other staff and Presenters from Potter County were: CPL Sean Batterson, Officer Jeff Walker, Judge John Leete, DJ Delores Bristol, NTCC Board Member Robin Freeman, Deb Hamilton, Liz Paisley, Officer Steve Miller & Harrison Valley Dive Team.

For the third year in a row, one of the Honor Cadets was from Potter County. This year’s recipient was Cadet Elizabeth Burd. Elizabeth is the daughter of David & Wendy Burd. Her plaque was presented to her by her dad, TPR Burd who was in full PSP uniform as were other parents that are Law Enforcement Officers.

Cadet Burd was awarded 3 different medals for the week. She was a member of the Charlie Company which was chosen as the outstanding Company of the week. She was chosen by her Commanders, Officer Melissa Recchiuti ( Officer with the Capitol Police in Washington DC) and Jenna Vermilya (a student a Mansfield University.) as the Camper of the week for Charlie Company and also as the Female Honor Cadet.

Cadet Burd will attend the Commissioners Honor Camp held in Hershey PA in Aug of 2010. The Female Honor Cadet Plaque is in Memory of STAFF SGT Ryan Ostrum a young man from the Liberty area who was killed while serving in Iraq. The plaque was given to Cadet Burd by Ryan’s mother, and her dad came back on stage to congratulate Cadet Burd.

The other former recipient’s were 2007 Steven Forney and 2008 Nick Ayers. This is our 8th year of the Northern Tier Camp Cadet Program and we have had 5 cadets in those 8 years from Potter County.

During their week stay at Camp Cadet they are exposed to many different aspects of Law Enforcement such as, DUI Task Force, PA Game Commission which brought over a live bear, birds and possum.

DCNR, water safety, Scuba diving, PSP Mounted Units, and PSP Motorcycle Officers, First-Aid, Fire Arms Simulator, Orienteering, Crime Scene Investigation, District Justice, President Judges, Yellow Ribbon, 4-H Extension, Road Dawgs Motorcycle Club, Helicopters from PSP, Guthrie and an Army Apache helicopter.

We also had EMS night with local EMS personnel explain their equipment and duties, District Attorney, K-9 demonstration, FBI and Cadets were able to climb the Army Rock Wall.

Cadets are able to attend the camp for a cost of $20 for the week. This money pays for insurance on the cadet for the week. The rest of the funding comes from fund raising and donations.

A Poker Run will be held at Larry’s Sports Center on Aug. 1 to raise money for the Camp. A Chinese Auctions will also be held that day along with the Army Rock Wall, finger printing for kids, PSP Helicopter any many more attractions.
