Pinpointing Gas Well Locations Poses Challenges

gaswellsiteMembers of the Potter County Natural Gas Task Force are concerned about a lack of information on the specific location of gas wells being drilled and brought into production across the county. The issue was aired at the group’s meeting on Tuesday night.

Bruce Sampson, a representative of Pennsylvania General Energy (PGE), said that PGE — one of the most active energy companies in Potter County — has been able to list specific addresses for its drilling operations in several other counties, but similar information is not available in some parts of Potter County.

County and township officials, as well as emergency management personnel, have a particular interest in knowing specific well locations, Task Force members pointed out. They shared those concerns with guest speaker Mike Welch, assistant district manager for the Pa. Dept. of Environmental Protection (DEP). Members suggested that DEP develop a notification system for counties and townships as part of its permitting process.

Task Force member Larry Hirst from Stewardson Township pointed out that Kettle Creek Hose Company Ambulance was summoned to a well site for an emergency call, but had a difficult time determining the location of the incident due to the lack of an address.

The issue will receive attention from a Public Safety, Emergency Management and Law Enforcement Committee that will soon be appointed from among Task Force volunteers. Potter County Today

Gas company personel were at serveral locations as well as in contact with Clinton County 911 to direct the ambulance directly to the scene without delay to the Stewardson Twsp. incident. As new wells are added they pinpointed on state maps and have signs at the ends of the well roads.GPS coordinates are also recorded.
