Could Potter County Benefit From Low Power FM Radio Station

Low Power FM Station Proposed
During Hurricane Katrina in the Southern States the only word from the outside to the people was through Low Power FM radio. Many of these stations stayed on the air 24 hours a day giving health and welfare messages to people listening and info were aid and shelters were located. Homeland Security was very impressed and now says that every rural area should have a LPFM service.

I am interested in bring a Low Power FM Radio (LPFM) service to Coudersport.

This station could have a venue to help the middle and high students who would have an interest in Media Productions. Students could have their own news service for the schools. Learn how to operate an FM Stereo Broadcast station.

Local events and government meeting could be open to the public with live broadcast and debates.

Storm alerts and weather related problems could be broadcast to the local area.

In order to start the process for an application there must be a non-profit group formed. LPFM service is a non-profit public radio service. Once the group is formed, an application license for construction of the station can be submitted to the FCC.

Cost for the station is minimal as compared to a large full power station. The LPFM can only run 100 watts ERP in an antenna less then 100 ft high. This would give about a 30 mile coverage area in Potter County.

Skip has written about establishing a Low Power FM Station in Potter County. He's like to hear your comments on this. Is there any interest in this?

What he failed to mention that it would only benefit Coudersport because he is blocked by the mast mountain range surrounding Coudy.

What you failed to know is that he is located on top of Niles Hill

I think it's a pretty good idea and we could use another FM station around here broadcasting anything.

I think yesterday's storms prove the need for it. Everyone now turns to Solomonswords for their late breaking news and unfortunately Jim was a victim of circumstance yesterday, when his power was off for 8 hours with a lot of other people who could have used an old fashioned radio with some batteries to get word of more approaching storms.

I live in Gaines, we have no way of getting local news. If they can get their radio station going, maybe I too could get some alerts. I wish it could reach us. I rely on Soloman'sWord... when the power is on.
