Former Smethport Woman Dead

Woman badly hurt in leap from van
in Canandaigua died Thursday

Information from
Democrat & Cronicle

Ontario County sheriff’s deputies are investigating whether alcohol was a factor in a late night incident that seriously injured a woman from Maryland.

Deputies were called to Route 332 in Canandaigua just after 11 p.m. Tuesday after an apparent argument between sisters led to one sister being critically injured when she jumped from a moving vehicle.

Mary Anne Fetter, 38, of Baltimore, formerly of Smethport, PA, was flown to Strong Memorial Hospital via Mercy Flight. The incident closed the northbound lane of 332, north of County Road 8, for more than two hours.

Ontario County sheriff’s deputies said Mary Anne Fetter and her sister, Linda Fetter, 41, of Henrietta were riding in the back seat of a van being driven by Karen Hoyer, 42, of Pasadena, Md.

The van is owned by Linda Fetter.

Deputies reported that the Fetter sisters were having a verbal disagreement, when Mary Anne apparently opened the sliding rear door on the passenger side and jumped from the moving vehicle onto Route 332, striking her head on the pavement. She suffered a serious head injury, deputies said.

Mary Anne Fetter was treated at the scene by members of Canandaigua Ambulance and the Canandaigua Fire Department. She was flown to Strong where she underwent surgery.

Mary Anne Fetter died on Thursday evening.

The investigation is continuing.
