It Doesn’t Have to Be This Way

State Budget Crisis:
It Doesn’t Have to Be This Way

By Rep. Martin Causer- Turtlepoint, PA

After signing a budget last week to pay state employees, Governor Rendell is back on the road again, making his case for higher taxes and higher spending...and predicting dire consequences if he doesn’t get it.

In fact, the governor’s own actions are having dire consequences right now because he chose to eliminate funding in the budget for vital programs:

• Many child care providers serving low-income families across the state are at risk to shut down due to the lack of state support. Parents who can’t find alternatives may be forced to quit their jobs to care for their children.
• Students heading off to college have no idea how much grant funding they will get from the state, or even when or if they'll get that money.
• Seniors, children and others who rely on county-based programs may see services reduced or suspended due to lack of funds. For example, Meals-on-Wheels programs in northeastern Pennsylvania are delivering fewer meals to the seniors and shut-ins who rely on them both for nutrition and for the benefit of having a daily visitor to check on them.

It doesn’t have to be this way.

The governor chose to line-item veto funding for child care services, as well as county programs, school districts, veterans services and more, for leverage in his fight for more spending and higher taxes. His actions are irresponsible and not in the best interest of this Commonwealth. The children, families and small business owners of Pennsylvania should not have to suffer while we work out our differences.

It's our job to contact our representatives to let them know that we are opposed to what Gov. Rendell is doing and to ask that they support the people.
