Jacquelyn “Jackie” Slowey Abwender, 83, of Portville, NY, formerly of New Smyrna Beach, Florida and Shinglehouse, PA

Portville, NY---Jacquelyn “Jackie” Slowey Abwender, 83, of Portville, NY, formerly of New Smyrna Beach, Florida and Shinglehouse, PA, died Friday, August 14, 2009 in the Wellsville Manor Care Center, Wellsville, NY after a long illness.

Born January 16, 1926 in Shinglehouse, PA, she was a daughter of Maynard V. and Irene G. Glady Freeborn. On April 1, 1960 in Pavilion, NY, she married James F. Slowey, who died on April 15, 1995. On December 9, 2008 in Little Valley, NY, she married Norman D. Abwender, who survives.

A native of Shinglehouse, Mrs. Abwender graduated from Shinglehouse High School, class of 1943. She also graduated from Bryant and Stratton in Buffalo. A legal secretary on Long Island, Mrs. Abwender was employed by Ray Smith and Son and also Douglas Dayton. She also pursued courses in accounting while residing on Long Island. While living in New Smyrna Beach, she was employed as business manager for two large condominiums.

She was a former member and past matron of Sawanna Chapter O.E.S. in East Hampton, Long Island, NY.

Surviving besides her husband are two sons, Donald K. (Diana) Bump of Columbia, SC and James F. (Sherry) Bump of Cocoa Beach, Florida; a daughter, Gretta L. (Albert Jr.) Olmstead, of Shinglehouse; seven grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Abwender was predeceased by a brother, Donald M. Freeborn and one grandson.

At Mrs. Abwender’s request, there will be no public visitation or funeral services. Burial will be in the Edgewater Cemetery, Edgewater, Florida.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Virgil L. Howard Funeral Home, Shinglehouse, PA.
