Metzger Earns Radiation Certification

Jason Metzger, director of radiation oncology at Charles Cole Memorial Hospital’s Patterson Cancer Care Center, recently passed the Medical Dosimetrist Certification Board exam.

As a certified medical dosimetrist, Metzger will facilitate radiation oncology treatments with physicians Dr. Hans Baerwald and Dr. David Moylan at the PCCC and help develop optimal treatment plans. While everyone plays a critical role in the delivery of health services, it is the medical dosimetrist who performs, assists, or directs the treatment planning process as designated by the radiation oncologist and medical physicist.

The medical dosimetrist must demonstrate an understanding of topics including cancer, radiation biology, radiation therapy techniques, radiation oncology physics, equipment technology, radiation safety and protection, anatomy, physiology, mathematics, and the psychosocial aspects of cancer.

The MDCB is the recognized certifying agency for medical dosimetry in the United States and administers the examination one time per year. Medical dosimetrists from various countries outside of the United States have elected to become certified by the MDCB. The candidate who successfully completes the certification examination may utilize the credential Certified Medical Dosimetrist (CMD). To maintain certification, CMDs must obtain continuing education credits as defined by the MDCB.

Metzger joined CCMH in 2005. He earned an associate degree in radiation therapy at Southern Maine Technical College and a bachelor’s degree in radiation sciences at the University of Oklahoma. In addition to his CMD certification, he is a certified radiation therapist and member of the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists, and American Society of Radiologic Technologists.

He and his wife, Jenny, live in Coudersport with their daughter, Clair.
