Potter County Citizen Corps Resurrected

citizencorpslogoPotter County Citizen Corps is being resurrected to allow for a partnership between local volunteers throughout the county and emergency service providers. A reorganizational meeting was held on Tuesday in Coudersport, as long-time community volunteers Cliff and Fay Wood of Ulysses spearheaded the effort to revitalize the organization.

Cliff Wood said the Citizen Corps’ goal is to have in place local volunteers who are trained to react to disasters and other public emergencies, so that they can partner with fire, ambulance, and other personnel.

“The concept is neighbors helping neighbors,” he explained. “The volunteers are prepared to take care of their families first and to then take care of their neighbors.”

Each local team has a leader and a designated meeting area in the community. Members discussed alternatives for generating public awareness of safety and emergency preparedness, including steps that can be taken to reduce the risk of spreading influenza H1N1.

Additional information on the Citizen Corps is available at 274-8900. More...

I'm sorry, but why do we have to "resurrect" the concept of neighbor helping neighbor? This is Potter County!! Not New Orleans. I really believe that every person I know would help his family and then go and help his neighbor. That's the way it is supposed to be!!!

The key distinction: training.
That way the emergency responders have designated volunteers to help them and these volunteers are working as a team to be sure the community is covered.
These volunteers should be commended, not belittled.
You have a problem with that?
Wait a minute, I see you did already apologize in advance for your inconsiderate comment. Never mind.
