Second Annual Astronomy Festival at Cherry Springs State Park

Second Annual Astronomy Festival at Cherry Springs State Park

Bring the whole family to Cherry Springs to celebrate the wonders of the universe and the International Year of Astronomy at the second annual Astronomy Festival, August 21-23, 2009 from 4:30 pm to 10:30 pm each night. Cherry Springs is teaming up with Penn State University’s Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics to provide activities for kids of all ages, and you don’t have to be an expert in Astronomy to join in on the fun.

On August 21 and 22 enjoy feature presentations on the latest in Astronomy research, star chart making and lessons, solar viewing, bottle rocket launching, and comet making. The Penn State Mars Society will demonstrate their radio-controlled Mars Rovers on August 21. On August 23 there will be a telescope building workshop for the kids (all materials will be provided for the workshop and pre registration is required at the welcome tent by 7:15 pm. Children should be accompanied by an adult), solar viewing, GPS basics and geo caching, and creating a scale model of the solar system.

Be sure to stop by the Night Skies Viewing Area each night at 9:00 pm, where we’ll have our telescopes set up on some of the amazing night sky objects that are visible at this time of year. On Saturday August 22 staff of the park and National Public Observatory (NPO) will present Stars-N-Parks, Cherry Springs’ longest-running program.

The festival will be held rain or shine. All activities except stargazing will be held on the Astronomy field. In the event of clouds or rain, stargazing will be modified and occur in the park pavilion. Visitors are asked to park their vehicles in the large lot on the North side of the park.

►For other programs see our calendar of events online at If you have a question about Cherry Springs or our programs, please call 814-435-5010.
