500 Layoffs Coming In Hornell, NY

Alstom to lay off 500

By Bob Clark
Hornell, N.Y. -Once again, a decrease in rail industry business is putting hundreds of Hornellians out of work.

Alstom and city officials announced Thursday 502 employees will be laid off in the company’s Hornell facilities starting Jan. 18, 2010.

“We are right now informing our employees of the downsizing of the plants,” said Isabelle de Fleurac, director of communications for Alstom’s North American operations, in a telephone interview Thursday afternoon. “At the end of the restructuring, there will be between 200-300 people left on the site.”

No, this can't be true!

Didn't you all hear Obama on tv yesterday, the economy is on its way up, the stimulus is working and the stock market is up...well it was on that day, not today -60's! Had a lot to say how good it is when he was in New if the system was not broken enough before now unified health care will bury this country for sure!

Nation wide this seems to be the change you can count on!Every day more jobs gone!god help us all!

we are in a managed depression.

time to step up your skills and expand into other ideas. The 30 year company job is gone.

I recommend attending the seminars put on by the Potter County ed Council regarding businesses and the Marciellus Shale Boom.

You can bitch and critize but you must Cange or Die. Don't be a victim.

WE all are victims!

Yeah and you all are morons if you want to blame this on the current President that has been in office less than a year. Try blaming your beloved G.W. Bush. He's the one to blame for this mess you fools.

We are in an increasingly global economy and every day more and more manufacturing jobs are shipped over seas.
We have huge debts at federal, state, county, and household level.

Currency represents an amount of labor, debt represents future labor, and by spending so far into debt we are making a huge bet on future labor when all signs point to our trade deficit (imports vs exports) getting significantly worse.

People complained because nobody predicted the housing melt down but we are currently on a collision course with disaster that will dwarf this recession and we choose to ignore it.

Not only will our compounding debs and out of control government spending worsen the situation, but we are behind in Education as well.

First the trend was for American companies to use lower cost over seas labor, now the trend is moving to fewer and fewer of those companies being American owned.

The US has become a nation of debt and we are creeping up on our credit limit. What then?

Having worked there, I knew this was coming. Sadly, management, both French and American, did also and nothing was done. I know alot of good people in that plant who worked dilligently, knowing this was coming. I hope they take advantages of the opportunities for schooling and things that will be available.

Elected to what office? He is never in the white house. Hes on talk shows or following his wife around. I wounder if he knows all this is even going on. Hes always on vacation

Come on now.. If you want to criticize Obama I am sure you can find some valid reasons like spending money like it's going out of style (though Bush would have done the same).

I think it is unfair to criticize Obama for spending too much time on Vacation when the guy is giving 3 or 4 speeches a week. I am not a democrat so I certainly don't agree with all his decisions, but I am not too blind to notice he is working hard.

"Yeah and you all are morons if you want to blame this on the current President" Moron? Well you are an idiot if you continue to blame the past president! Not enough money, no problem, we will just print more! Well let's not put it back into the programs we stole Social Security! Heavens no, let us make more government run programs since the ones we have now are running so smoothly...United Postal Service, Social Security, Medicare, WELFARE...ya, you are right we are morons...!

Robin Williams' plan...(Hard to argue with this logic!)

'I see a lot of people yelling for peace but I have not heard of a plan for peace. So, here's one plan..'

1) 'The US will apologize to the world for our 'interference' in their affairs, past & present. You know, Hitler, Mussolini, Stalin, Tojo, Noriega, Milosevic, Hussein, and the rest of those 'good 'ole' boys', we will never 'interfere' again.

2) We will withdraw our troops from all over the world, starting with Germany , South Korea , the Middle East , and the Philippines . They don't want us there.. We would station troops at our borders. No one allowed sneaking through holes in the fence..

3) All illegal aliens have 90 days to get their affairs together and leave We'll give them a free trip home. After 90 days the remainder will be gathered up and deported immediately, regardless of whom or where they are. They're illegal!!! France will welcome them.

4) All future visitors will be thoroughly checked and limited to 90 days unless given a special permit!!!! No one from a terrorist nation will be allowed in. If you don't like it there, change it yourself and don't hide here. Asylum would never be available to anyone. We don't need any more cab drivers or 7-11 cashiers.

5) No foreign 'students' over age 21. The older ones are the bombers.. If they don't attend classes, they get a 'D' and it's back home baby.

6) The US will make a strong effort to become self-sufficient energy wise. This will include developing nonpolluting sources of energy but will require a temporary drilling of oil in the Alaskan wilderness. The caribou will have to cope for a while

7) Offer Saudi Arabia and other oil producing countries $10 a barrel for their oil. If they don't like it, we go someplace else. They can go somewhere else to sell their production. (About a week of the wells filling up the storage sites would be enough.)

8) If there is a famine or other natural catastrophe in the world, we will not 'interfere.' They can pray to Allah or whomever, for seeds, rain, cement or whatever they need. Besides most of what we give them is stolen or given to the army. The people who need it most get very little, if anything.

9) Ship the UN Headquarters to an isolated island someplace. We don't need the spies and fair weather friends here. Besides, the building would make a good homeless shelter or lockup for illegal aliens.

10) All Americans must go to charm and beauty school. That way, no one can call us 'Ugly Americans' any longer. The Language we speak is ENGLISH..learn it....or LEAVE...Now, isn't that a winner of a plan?

'The Statue of Liberty is no longer saying 'Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses.' She's got a baseball bat and she's yelling, 'you want a piece of me?' '

well you can thank all of the democrats that voted for that thing in the whitehouse. all you had to do was listen to it durning the campaign to know it was full of crap and the democrats bought it you though you were getting something for nothing well you are getting what you wanted

Anonymous said...

the only morons are the ones that voted for obimbo work hard so he can tax you to death and yes it will happen. someone will have to pay for the the democrats spending

Thal said...

"someone will have to pay for the the democrats spending"

The 2 party system we have today is badly flawed. The democrats are hardly the only ones to bear the blame of excessive spending.

Here is a chart of "Average Federal Deficit as a Percentage of GDP by Administration"

Kennedy, Johnson, Carter, Clinton, and Obama are/were democrats.

Historically, the "conservative party" has some of the least conservative spending.

I already said I believe Bush would have cut checks for the bailout program too, but I will concede that Obama is on a spending spree our children cannot afford to pay for.
