Appeal Over County Emergency Center Denied By Court

911logogogoWeeks after a Commonwealth Court panel rejected a suit filed by three couples who objected to the new Potter County emergency services center being built near their homes in the Maple View area, the full court has turned down the plaintiffs’ appeal.

A three-judge panel earlier this year affirmed a Potter County Court of Common Pleas ruling that the property development could proceed. Plaintiffs had alleged that the Coudersport Borough Zoning Hearing Board abused its discretion in granting a variance for the renovation of a county-owned former group home for the mentally retarded into an emergency center, accompanied by a 120-foot communications tower and generators.

Concerned about the possible health effects of the communications equipment, safety issues, aesthetics and a negative impact on property values, the plaintiffs argued that the board abused its discretion in permitting the structure in a residential zone. Their legal argument was based on the contention that the county should not be able to enlarge a non-conforming use to a vacant building. Attorney Patrick Larsen has been representing the Zoning Hearing Board. County Solicitor D. Bruce Cahilly has also been involved in the defense case.

911center1Meanwhile, Potter and Tioga counties are deploying digital microwave technology for emergency communications. Emergency Services Directors John Hetrick (Potter) and Dave Cohick (Tioga) recently issued the following communication to first responders in the two counties:

“Our goal is to build and maintain a solid infrastructure to meet the needs of next generation 911. October is a busy month for the project as we start to cut over to the digital microwave. Also, staff will be trained by vendors on how to use their products. We are excited about our future and what capabilities will be made available to our counties.” Potter County Today

Communication is not going to get better just more reliable. We live in the sticks and nothing is going to work seemlessly. Everyone bitched when they lost there old lowband radio's because you could talk so far, do you not remember not being able to talk from inside a building? No radio freq is going to be perfect so stop kidding yourselves.

I don't believe that anyone is looking for the radio's to be endless. It sure could be better.

Man I can't wait to get a new microwave.
