"Hardly anyone opposes the idea that first-world countries should assist developing countries, if that assistance helps countries to develop. The question is: does it?

I am afraid it does not. "

"If nothing else, aid to Africa seems to have lowered rather than increased economic growth."

Sometimes shipping free food to some of these regions does little more than put their local farmers out of business.

It is a short term fix with long term consequences but the goal probably has more to do with the missionaries distributing the food on the ground then any actual attempt to bring Haiti out of an economic slump so that it can sustain its own population.

As I understand it this project was to earn $ to send to a gentleman who is trying to help a school get started. I can't help but think that is a worthwhile project.

Lets be honest, what they are teaching in Africa are bible studies.

Something like 17% of Africa is now catholic because missionaries have dedicated so much time to educating them on how to warship god, but who is teaching them how to grow crops etc.?

The Catholic church in Africa has also openly opposed condoms and birth control contributing to the unsustainable population growth and spread of HIV.

It is also said that the major strain of HIV in the US originated from Haiti in the late 60's (source: http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2007/10/071029-aids-haiti.html).
The church did not have any missionaries in the area around then did they?
