Elliot Ness question?

Hi Jim,

I am hoping one your readers can answer this question? I’ve looked over the internet for the answer, but I’m unable to find it.

While writing the book, The Untouchables, Elliot Ness lived in Coudersport. He died in Coudersport on May 16, 1957. He actually was living in Coudy because he was employed with North Ridge Industrial Corporation.

The internet says that Mr. Ness rented a room at the Hotel Crittenden, but some articles suggest that he had a home in Coudy.

My questions is, does anyone know if he did own/rent a home in Coudersprot; if so, where?

Thank you very much,

Cathi

PS: How in the heck did this infamous defender of the law die in a county where justice is NOT wearing a blindfold? [as in: Lady Justice on top of the court house].
Thank you very much,
Cathi

Cathi,
You should contact Commissioner Paul Heimel. He wrote two books on Eliott Ness. You could call the commissioner’s office and ask for him and is he is not available, ask for his voice mail - I am sure he would give you the information you are seeking.

I believe Jim Rigas lives in the house the Ness owned behind Northwest bank.

Paul Heimel wrote a great book about the very subject. I suggest you get a copy. It is a great read.

I had seen one article that Mr.Ness did have a home in coudy with his wife. In the same article It was said that he died a drunk. He was taken back and buried in Cleveland Ohio where he had worked as the Safety Director. The way I found the story is by searching Mobster's/Al Capone Hope this Helps

Why don't you try the Historical Society here in Coudersport. It's on Main St...across from the phone company.

The Ness Family lived in the home right behind the Northwest Bank in Coudersport. His son, Robert, was in our class at school.

I am not sure, as I heard this from a friend of my parents who was a small boy when he lived here...

I was told that he owned the first house on the left, behind the bank, on 3rd Street and East Street...

Hope this helps...

He owned a home in Coudersport. It is on East Third St - directly behind the bank. It is owned by the Rigas family.

Being a resident here for the past 15 years, I was always told Elliot Ness lived in the house behind Northwest Bank which MaryAnn and Jim Rigas own. I don't know if that's true or not.

If memory serves me correctly, Mr. Ness lived in a house here in town, somewhere near CARP

as i under stand it one of the first things mr ness did in the area was to get arrested for fishin without a licence. I guess lady justic not having a blind fold didn't really come into play.

I have a copy of his will if you'd like to read it. He died almost a pauper- with very few assets. For years his ashes were stored in a garage in Ohio and were eventually buried there.

as many have already commented... Yes it is the house now owned by Doctor Rigas

His house was indeed located behind the bank. Last house on the left. I think it's still in color. James Regis lives there now.

If you want a really good read, read anything written by Paul Heimel, his books are really well written and very factual.
