Fenton "Thomas" McGonnell II, 85, formerly of Larabee, PA

LARABEE, PA - Fenton "Thomas" McGonnell II, 85, formerly of Larabee, died Saturday (Oct. 3, 2009) in Sena-Kean Manor, Smethport, PA, following a brief illness.

Born Jan. 19, 1924, in Coudersport, PA, he was a son of Fenton T. and Elva M. Noether McGonnell Sr. On Sept. 6, 1947, in Buffalo, NY, he married Carolyne E. Stonemetz, who passed away June 14, 1982.

Mr. McGonnell was a 1941 graduate of Coudersport High School and graduated in 1950 from St. Bonaventure University with a degree in journalism.

He had resided in the Olean, NY area before moving to Eldred in 1954.

Mr. McGonnell was a veteran of World War II, having served with the U.S. Navy as a hospital corpsman in the European Theater and the Mediterranean.

He had been employed as a Metropolitan Life Insurance agent for five years in Olean, NY and for 25 years was employed by Hinsdale (NY) Central High School and Olean High School as an English teacher prior to his retirement in 1979.

Mr. McGonnell was a member of St. Raphael Church in Eldred, PA, where he was a third-degree member of the Knights of Columbus. He also was a member of Eldred American Legion Post 887, New York State Retired Teachers Association and a past member of St. Bonaventure and Smethport country clubs. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and golfer.

Surviving are four sons; Fenton T. (Deborah) McGonnell III of Alexandria, VA, Christopher C. McGonnell of Bradford, PA, James K. (Kathleen) McGonnell and Mark J. (Joan) McGonnell, both of Olean, NY; a daughter, Roberta A. (Fred Bailey) Stephan of Olean, NY; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Patricia Baum of Arcade, NY; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by an infant brother, Stephen Leo McGonnell; and two sisters, Virginia Yuhasz and Kay Saar.

Friends may call Tuesday (Oct. 6, 2009) from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Frame Funeral Home, Eldred, PA. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday (Oct. 7, 2009) at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, Sartwell, with Father John J. Murphy, pastor, as celebrant. Private burial will take place in St. Eulalia Cemetery, Coudersport, PA.

A Scriptural wake service will be held Tuesday (Oct. 6, 2009) at 3:30 p.m. in the funeral home.
