PA’s Wind Generation Capacity Increased Nearly 30 Percent in Third Quarter of 2008
Harrisburg – A national report ranks Pennsylvania’s growth in wind energy generation as the second-most of any state in the third quarter of 2008, Governor Edward G. Rendell said today.
The report by the American Wind Energy Association, or AWEA, shows Pennsylvania continues to be a national leader in building a clean energy economy and in creating green collar jobs – two of Governor Rendell’s strongest priorities.
“This is the second consecutive quarter that Pennsylvania has been ranked second in the nation for our growth in this industry," said Governor Rendell. “We have worked hard to encourage the growth of clean, homegrown energy resources and our efforts have paid off by creating new jobs, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and curbing our reliance on foreign sources of fuel.”
Pennsylvania saw a 29 percent increase in wind energy generation between July and September last year, bringing capacity to 595 megawatts, or enough electricity to power 178,500 homes.
The new wind capacity was created by the completion of two major wind projects—the 70-megawatt North Allegheny development in Cambria and Blair counties and the 62.5-megawatt Highland Wind Project in Cambria County.
The Governor added that as many as 500 Pennsylvanians are building more wind farms that are expected to begin production by the end of 2009.
“The amount of wind energy being produced in Pennsylvania, and nationally, prevents a lot of pollution that harms the public’s health, including more than a million tons of carbon that would otherwise go into the atmosphere and trap heat,” Governor Rendell continued. “Pennsylvania is far ahead of most states in developing green energy and green jobs that protect our environment and build our economy.”
AWEA’s report found the total wind power capacity now operating in the U.S. is more than 31,000 megawatts, generating enough electricity to power the equivalent of nearly 9 million homes and avoid 57 million tons of carbon emissions annually. The wind energy is expected to reduce carbon emissions from the electricity sector by 2.5 percent.
The full report is available on the AWEA website at www.awea.org/publications/reports/3Q09.pdf.

Second in national ranking yet my electric bill continues to climb sky high. Hmmm.
I Love Windmills!!
I wonder what Art Kear has to say about this?
Enough to power 178,500 homes in Pa.Seems the wind blows more than we have been led to believe. With all these turbines around why aren't people dropping like flies and filing thousands of lawsuits?Could it be that we have lost another opportunity by falling prey to the B.S. spouted by the tree huggers again? Wake up Potter, the gas and oil industury is your last hope and they are already starting to steer clear. You can't imagine what is going on all around you.Listen to the Bunny Huggers, and rely on The Pa. Wilds. Idiots!
Consider the source of the information. They are also the same group that tells you "they sound like a fridg".Look up who is on their board of directors.
2 bad our state is probably ranking 48th in job growth.
Considering the populations of PA, I don't think enough windpower for 178,500 homes is very much. PA is ranked 4th in population.
Again potter county is a day late & a dollar short ! When are the powers that be and the people going to wake up ? It is really sad that in potter county, most of the small towns and the people fight every opportunity that comes along.Thats why most companys steer clear.

"Consider the source of the information"...Even when some of us went, saw and heard the wind turbines, that was just not quit good enough now was it? Why?
Because we liked what we saw, they were not loud, no vibration or dead animals at the foot of these turbines.
Guess you are the only source we should go by, no thanks!

You are so right!
well look at the knot headed commissioners we have keep hireing people we don,t need and can,t pay but they are experts on wind farms.
Keep electing fossils that don't like new ideas and thats what you get....but I guess that means fossil fuel should be a go.
@7:56
We have a high population of elderly right wing Christians that are unwilling to accept new ideas.
Just because you don't agree with people against the wind turbines doesn't mean that they are wrong or unwilling to accept new ideas. They are probably the people who will have to look at, hear, and feel these things for the rest of their lives. I don't blame them. If wind turbines were planned to be erected by my home where I would have to look and hear them, I'd be against them too.
Typical tree hugger. All pushed for renuable non polluting energy but,And this is a BIG but,NOT IN MY BACKYARD!
Are you sure the wind growth isn't from Rendell's office?
lets see.....put up with a little noise from turbines or pollute our drinking water and tear up the earth?
Only thing I can say is, you anti-turbine folk are probably the same people that put a price on a human being's life.
meh it'll cost too much for that surgery and this fellow has no insurance...pull the plug!
No that would be obama!
I think Obama is the one who came out
and said that he and his family have all the insurance they need and that he felt we should all have that same right.
Are you sure you meant Obama
Are their others who have come out publicly and said that even though we pay for their insurance that they do not want the same insurance for us, the tax payers who are paying for theirs. Please go back and check to see who it was that you had mistaken for Obama. I want to ask them about the death panel clause in their policy.
Do you all realize the citizens that have medical cards will not be considered as "uninsured", oh ya, check it out, they have insurance all right, it is called welfare and it is our dime!
Obama is so busy trying to distract us with this attack on Fox News that he does not know whether to scratch is watch or wind his butt!
