Marjorie F. Calhoun, 94, of Mahopac, NY, formerly of Oswayo, PA

Mahopac, NY---Marjorie F. Calhoun, 94, of Mahopac, NY, formerly of Coneville, PA, died Friday, October 30, 2009 in Waterview Hills Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, Purdys, NY after a long illness.

Born February 25, 1915 in Buffalo, NY, she was a daughter of Maxine MacDonald and a foster daughter of Frank and Katherine Cowan Stonemetz. On June 24, 1933 in Port Allegany, PA, she married Golden R. Calhoun, who died on January 28, 1971.

She was a graduate of Shinglehouse High School, class of 1933. Mrs. Calhoun was employed at the Olean General Hospital in Olean, NY as a ward secretary until her retirement.

She was a member of the Oswayo United Methodist Church in Oswayo, PA and the Missionary Society of the church; a former member of Eureka Chapter #52 O.E.S., Shinglehouse; a life member of the former Hebron Grange; and a member of the former Rebekah Lodge in Oswayo. Mrs. Calhoun was a former secretary and treasurer of the Rathbone Cemetery Association and a former secretary for Hebron Township for many years. She also was a longtime volunteer for the American Cancer Society.

Mrs. Calhoun enjoyed quilting, bowling, and reading.

Surviving are two daughters, Maxine L. Rice of DeBary, Florida and Gayle L. (Bernard) Zawrotny of Mahopac, NY; a son, Gary D. Calhoun of Shinglehouse; nine grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Calhoun was predeceased by two sons, an infant son and Dennis D. Calhoun, who died on June 23, 1988; a grandson, Daniel Rice; and a son-in-law, John M. Rice.

Friends may call on Monday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Virgil L. Howard Funeral Home, Shinglehouse, PA where funeral services will be held on Tuesday, November 3, 2009 at 9 a.m. with the Rev. Leo J. Gallina, pastor of St. Bernard Catholic Church, Bradford, PA, officiating. Committal services and burial will be held in the Rathbone Cemetery, Coneville, PA.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association, the Leukemia Society, or to a charity of the donor’s choice.

What a Wonderful, loving, God fearing lady! Always lending a hand wherever needed. Awesome sense of humor~loved working with the youth in the Oswayo U.M. Church for years.
