County Fills Technology Post; Approves Employee Internet Policy

internetpolicyThe Potter County Commissioners have hired the county’s first director of technological services and adopted a policy to regulate employees’ use of the Internet and related resources. Both actions were approved by unanimous vote of Commissioners Doug Morley, Susan Kefover and Paul Heimel at Thursday’s business meeting.

William Solomon of Austin has been hired from a pool of six finalists who were interviewed for the new technology position. His annual salary has been set at $40,000. Solomon will be working with the county’s technology consultant, Josh Hoffman of Shinglehouse, beginning Dec. 7 to become familiar with the county’s resources and policies. Morley, chairman of the board, said establishment of a full-time position was necessary to keep the county government up to date with technological and operational changes in the workplace.

Meanwhile, county employees are now subject to a Technological Systems Acceptable Use Policy. Effective immediately all employees shall:

  • Use Internet access and email only in those ways which are consistent with their job function.
  • Take reasonable steps to effectively manage all electronic files, including periodic backup of files and deletion of files and data no longer needed..
  • Respect all copyright laws extending to email and Internet information.
  • Never send threatening, slanderous, racially and/or sexually harassing messages nor represent himself/herself as someone else. Messages sent anonymously are prohibited.

In general, common sense and courtesy should be used. Appropriate use of resources is limited to the official work of the county. The county reserves the right to audit such use and to require an employee to cease use of, and delete, any and all personal files and applications. Potter County Today

Gee what happened to $30,000 that was discussed before.

Does anyone else think it is funny that this article is talking about the technology policy and the person in the image is looking at Ebay?

@1:58 am....

$40,000 is pretty low for someone at the director level, just imagine what level of clue factor you'd get for the IT entry level pay of 30K.

When it comes to IT and MIS competencies, you will get what you pay for.

This individual is responsible for developing and implementing ALL computer use policies within the county government. That includes the security and safe guarding of your county's sensitive data.

You can't really put a price tag on data security and data integrity.

Congratulations Mr Solomon, and good luck.

What a joke, why didn't the dream team sub it out to a contracter with no benefits for a poor county and no jobs they like to spend tax payers $$$$$.

Hello 4:07. Good to hear from you again. You haven't bitched about the commissioners for quite a while now, so welcome back. With your expertise on money management, why don't you stop by the courthouse and share your suggestions in person? Then stop in at the Education Council for a lesson in spelling and punctuation.

Congratulations Bill! We look forward to working with you.

Crap - "everyone" knows whothat bald head belongs too. He's been kissing up to the Ed Council since he lost his job with ...hmmmmm. Perhaps his girlfriend knows! And, if Solomon lasts as long as he did at this previous job - well, good luck! And by the way, if one stops in the Commissioner's office they won't find anyone - just the mouth!
