Reader Asks Help For McKean SPCA

Animal Shelter Contest

If you could please post this on your blog I would greatly appreciate it.

The Mckean County SPCA is entered in a contest to win $10,000. Please go to and vote for our local shelter! Our SPCA is ran 100% on donations and this money would make a big difference in the lives of many animals and the wonderful staff that cares for them.

Thank you!
Amanda Hager

PS. We are currently # 23 which is almost 3000 votes behind 1st place and every vote will bring us one step closer to winning this!

Roulette residents should be aware that since they reside in Potter County, the McKean County Animal Shelter will not provide any services to them at all. Instead, they are told to go to Wellsboro to the Potter County shelter. Just because your children attend school in Port Allegany and you donate to charities in McKean County, does NOT mean that they will provide services to you.

McKean County SPCA will accept ANY animal brought to its shelter no matter where it is from and will adopt to any family (that meets the adoption requirements) no matter where they live. They do only cover Mckean County as far as animal cruelty investigation and other animal complaints or concerns.

Anonymous : What is the status of the land purchase for the Potter County SPCA facility ?

If McKean County SPCA will accept any animal brought to its shelter, that is a NEW policy. I was turned away with a kitten that had been dropped off at my place by some uncaring person and told that I would have to take the kitten to the Potter County sheltert in Wellsboro, which I did. In Wellsboro I was treated with courtesy and respect.

I am delighted to hear that McKean County has changed its policy...and am curious to know when that policy was changed!

Wonder why it has taken so long to get an SPCA here as there was over 2million dollars bequested years ago. This money was left with specific directions that a shelter be built in Potter County for Potter County animals.
The PSPCA (headquartered in Philly) who is in charge of the money are planning to build an animal prison here to hold Philadelphia's animals (pit bulls and birds from cockfighting) until their cases go to court. There will be a small scale adoption center to satisfy Helen Fath Greene's will. The PSPCA claims that we are too small to support a "tradional" SPCA adoption center but they have plans to close the Wellsboro shelter.
Sounds like they are using the money to fix their problems and not what it was intended for.
It's too bad someone doesn't have to answer our questions.

Please keep in mind that people from McKean County actually read this blog and the SPCA in Bradford is doing good things and they are appreciated.

I understand the article to ask McKean County residents to vote, not for a donation and not sure how people started talking about other things.

Ummm.....Last time I looked at a map, Wellsboro is in Tioga county. So this leads me to believe that you....sir or madam...are full of crap. Obviously the SPCA policies are not mandated by there county location.

I don't think Potter county has its own SPCA. I googled for one and for Potter it said "Please see surrounding counties for your nearest humane organization."
