Wrong Onstar Coordinates Send Emergency Crews On Wild Goose Chase In Potter County Forest

Wrong Location
An erroneous ONSTAR GPS Coordinate report sent Austin Fire Rescue and Ambulance crews and Coudersport Based State Police rushing to the intersection of the Wild Boy Road and the East Fork Road in a remote area of the Susquehannock State Forest in southern Potter County at 11:40am this morning where a person was reported entrapped after a 2 car crash.

The crews and troopers searched the entire area and located nothing. It was discovered that the report was in error and that the actual crash scene was not in Potter County, and probably not even in Pennsylvania.

Makes me feel great as an onstar subscriber!

"This is Onstar, I see that you're lost. I'll call for help".

Wow, is Onstar using the same location criteria that most of the VoIP providers use for 9-1-1 service?

So the $18.95 a month is good for what? Feeling warm and fuzzy paying for that now!

3:44, no

What about the open doors at the Fire Hall. I checked the temp. and found it to be 48 degrees. So I found today a wast for ya. Waste fuel in the trucks and in the building. Waiting 3 seconds for the doors to close wouldn't have got you there any quicker. Remember about the open hand policy. Don't come with it held open until you have showed you have saved. However good job on the response.

"3:44, no"

I realize that they do not use the same technology, and in fact my question was what is known as a rhetorical. Onstar uses GPS coordinates, much the same as cellular providers use to locate 9-1-1 callers. The VoIP providers use an address provided by the subscriber which may, or as often is the case, may not be correct. They do not scrub the data they receive against the established Master Street Address Guides that were established by the wireline telephone companies several years ago to verify legitimate addresses and aid in the location of those in need. Granted VoIP service is cheaper, but can you put a value on quality 9-1-1 service when you need it? That is a rhetorical question as well, but just for fun we will say that the answer is "absolutely not".

I thought Onstar worked pretty good. My buddy used it to help him get out of his vehicle one night after he had a few cocktails. He pushed his Onstar button and said "My doors won't unlock and let me out, What should I do?" Onstar replied "Sir, Put your vehicle into the park position and the doors will unlock" Buddy says "Oh that worked, Thanks"
True Story!

My only questions is, if they didn't crash there, where did they crash?

Seriously, those people could still be laying in a ditch somewhere thanks to OnStar!

Happy Turkey Day :)

Commenter 5:04 If it was your house on fire, or you were having a heart attack would you want them to put the fire engine into park..get out and close the door behind them? If you are there when this happens why don't you just close the door for these men and women who safe our lives and homes.

It is called a automatic garage door opener. Most of them come with remote controls. You can push a button on the remote to open and close the door from some distance away without even leaving the vehicle. I bet one would work well at saving energy and would eventually pay for itself.

10:08 Auto garage door openers are great if you have them and we do not. We do often forget to close the doors in the event of an emergency due to the fact of a fast paced environment when a call comes out we are more focused on the task at hand which is getting to the scene as quickly as safely possible to help those in need who called 911. So please don't for one minute think that we just choose to just not close the doors like I said in the heat of the moment small things like that aren't of the highest priority and are easily overlooked. So if the next time the doors are open and the trucks are out and you notice it please notify someone in the dept. know so they can get them closed.

Im taking my 2008 Malibu in for service for the Onstar, seems like its not tracking me correctly and giving the wrong GPS location, I was in buford, GA but the GPS said I was in Sandy Springs, GA about 30 miles away... it just started doing this, its very annoying, the service advisers are very nice and try to help, but nothing really works..
