DOMESTICITY: An Installation

Reading an article in the Sunday New York Times on banned clotheslines a few weeks ago, my first reaction was “This must be a joke.” Clotheslines are eyesores? I’ve been photographing the movement and color of clothes blowing in the wind for years. Later that same day, driving down a dirt road headed for a good hiking spot, I suddenly heard a loud mechanical noise, rounded a bend in the road, and saw something that resembled a rocket launch pad (an oil rig) shooting up through the trees – and I knew the joke was on us…

What kind of society bans energy-saving clotheslines, but promotes driving gas-guzzling hummers, strip-mining, and drilling that could turn the natural beauty of Pennsylvania into a wasteland of scarred mountaintops, gas leaks and polluted air & water? Gas/oil/energy gluttony leads to war and destruction of precious natural resources at home and abroad. I was compelled to make about it…

I will be showing Domesticity: An Installation and Fortune Cookies, a new series of mixed media on the role of women at the Art Faculty Show Dec. 3-Jan.7.
