Electric Rates To Jump 30% Tomorrow For Some

Rate Caps Expire
Harrisburg, Pa. - Tonight, midstaters will be counting down to the new year, but the countdown is also on for PPL customers.

Rate caps expire tomorrow.

PPL customers will have to pay 30% more for electricity.

Allegheny Power and Penelec have been allowed to raise rates gradually and unlike other power companies, customers should not see extreme jumps in prices when rate caps expire for those companies one year from now at the beginning of 2011.

My Goodness it is hard enough for the senior citizens to pay for heat and now the electric Co wants there share. When on a fixed income the money does not go very far. With all the cutbacks on medicare what are they supposed to do...

How about a young working family struggling to feed and clothe their children? Their expenses are usually much higher than seniors. This will be a huge burden for them...

Hopefully Tri County REC will not raise them as much as the others.....yeah right! I'm dreaming.

Don't you know by now that big business and the government doesn't care about Seniors or the young people trying to raise a family. It is all about money. they are all greedy and don't care, Especially about us rural citizens. But remember that GOD cares about all of us and we just have to keep the faith.

Obama could have stopped this but didn't! So don't bitch if you voted for him ! YES WE CAN ! YES WE CAN !More change you can count on !!!

Isn't utilities controlled by the PUC, a STATE agency, not the federal government 1:46pm. WOW!!!

The power companies are regulated some by the Federal government as well, they do receive Federal funding, tax brakes, etc.

The Rate Caps are a State mandate, not a Federal one. They have nothing to do with Obama but it doesn't stop people from bringing his name up and blaming him for everything. I think the last snow was his fault too!!!

Why can't we (citizens) write off all our expenses? Food, clothing, shelter, raising children, car/fuel to go to work, etc.?

Tri-Countys rate's will not be affected, their rate caps came off years ago, that is why there rates are alot higher than most.

As well as the fact that Tri-County buys its energy from Penelec!

Maybe we should take this to Obama and see if we can get it federally regulated like the healthcare will soon be.

I dont care if tri-county's rates are alot higher, i'd much rather have them than penelec. tri-county's crews are top notch and respond quickly to outages, penelec takes hours to even respond to them.

"Money" Money" Money" It's all about "Money!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
No matter who gets the blunt of it, elderly, the middle class, the young people, etc. some one out there wants to get richer!
No matter how hard we struggle to keep our heads above water, they always seem to take us one step backwards. I get furious when I see a young man old enough & able to work stand in line with a food-stamp card in Sheetz buying junk food when I work every day and can not afford to buy the junk he bought! The system is wrong, it sure seems like it works against us hard working folks!

It sure does not seem fair, here is a good one for ya's. several yrs ago, I was shopping in a Jubilee store when at that time they gave out food stamps. A lady came in at least 3 or 4 times bought something and recieved change back until she had enough change to buy a pack of cigs. The store mananger saw what she was doing and asked her not to come back in the store if she thought she was going to keep on pulling that, I guess she has done it before. He told her the food stamps was for food not to buy cigs. with. I'm sure others pulled this too but she happened to be the one to get caught but it sure upsets ya when we are working for them to even get the food stamps and now they have a card to abuse! This system started out to help those in need, again, those in need, not to be abused by people who choose not to work! By the way this young woman was very well dressed to the point she did not look like the type to be receiving food stamps!

Nothing! Nothing! Nothing! is fair anymore for us that work everyday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This all happened years ago with the big push for deregulation of our utility companies. They allowed or required the utility companies to cap their rates which would then expire (in say 10 yrs?? not sure) They wanted us consumers to be protected but we all had the choice to go out their & look for brokers for supplying our energy. This was all suppose to "spur" competition which would bring our costs down -- didn't work did it. Well..perhaps now that the utility companies can raise our rates -- we will all have to go looking for the best rate & generate the competition they were talking about with deregulation. My guess is that it still won't work -- it certainly didn't make our phone bills go down either! Good luck to all of us. The best we can do is to probably pick "green energy" suppliers. So....go shopping for your energy supplier & then you have to enter into a contract with them. Your local utility company in turn will just "weld" the electricity thru their wires & the energy supplier who buys power out on the market will bill you. Your local utility co will still fix the power outages, downed wires, etc. Also, Penelec takes longer now cause they had to give up the 3-man barn in Eldred, PA. Now they come farther. Allegheny Power has to come from quite a distance too. That's big business for you.
