Icy Road Leads To Crash East Of Roulette Sunday

Sunday Morning Crash
A former Roulette resident, now living in Maryland, was unhurt in the wee hours of Sunday morning in a crash a short distance east of Bilek's curve on icy Route 6, that took out an electric pole and fence before overturning in a yard.

Michael A. Spencer, 25, of Laurel Ho, MD, was driving a 2006 Nissan Titan east on Route 6, at 12:30 am, when he lost control on the icy road surface. Spencer over- steered and slid off the roadway on the northern berm, rotated counter-clockwise and impacted a utility pole with the left side of his vehicle. It then rotated clockwise impacting a shrub, and then a fence with the front of the vehicle.

The vehicle's tires then dug into the moist ground, and caused it to overturn onto it's roof ending up facing north.

Spencer was wearing a seat belt and not injured. His vehicle sustained disabling damage to the roof and left side. It was towed from the scene by Kightlinger Motors. Roulette Fire Police and Fire Dept. assisted on the scene.

Spencer was charged with Driving Vehicle At Safe Speed by Coudersport Troopers.

The crash took out Zito cable, phone, and internet service to Roulette until late Sunday morning.

The fence was the same on damaged last year in a crash in which several teens were seriously injured.

It's not a misprint, it is the way the legislature titled the law.

This seems to be a standard citation for anyone who crashes up there. I live in MD and never see someone charged after a one vehicle crash. How does the officer know the driver wasn't driving at a safe speed? What is a safe speed? Do they just assume that because the person crashed it must be a result of driving at an unsafe speed? You can slide off an icy road going 15 mph. Would that be considered an unsafe speed? I personally think a good lawyer could get this thrown out every time but no one does because the cost of the lawyer would be more than the fine.

You can fight this yourself in court. You don't have to have an attorney. Get weather reports for that time of the day, pictures of the curve, etc....bet you get it reduced or thrown out. It cannot hurt to try. My son did this years ago & it worked. Just go in prepared.

bet there woulda been a few more charges thrown in there too if he weren't a cop!
