John Patrick Welch, 43, formerly of Eldred, PA

PITTSBURGH, Pa.- John Patrick Welch, 43, formerly of Eldred, died Monday (Dec. 28, 2009) following an apparent heart attack while hunting in Potter County.

Born April 15, 1966, in Olean, N.Y., he was a son of Dr. John P. "Jack" and Berniece A. Wallon Welch Jr.

He was a 1984 graduate of Otto-Eldred High School, and a 1989 graduate of the University of Pittsburgh with a degree in mechanical engineering. He had been employed by Dresser-Rand Corp. as a mechanical engineer in Olean; Baton Rouge, la.; Houston, Texas; and later in Schenectady, N.Y., for more than 10 years.

He was later employed as a mechanical engineer for General Electric in Schenectady before moving to the Pittsburgh area, where he was a mechanical engineer for Westinghouse Corp. While employed at Dresser-Rand, he was credited with several patents in mechanical engineering.

He was a past member of St. Raphael Church in Eldred.

He loved spending time with his children and attending their school and sports activities. He enjoyed being outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed carpentry and cooking.

Surviving, in addition to his mother of Eldred, are two sons, John Preston Welch III and Alexander Joseph Welch, both of Ballston Spa, N.Y.; one daughter, Madeleine Paige Welch of Ballston Spa; four sisters, Pat Welch of Rochester, N.Y., Kathy (Chris) Merlau of Sun City, Ariz., Jackie (Perry) Burdick of Smethport and Maureen "Mo" (Tim) Raught of Eldred; several nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Kathy Layfield of Olean.

He was preceded in death by his father in 1996; a brother, Michael J. "Doc" Welch in 1990; and a sister, Dr. Ann Marie Welch in 1982.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday (Dec. 30, 2009) at Frame Funeral Home, Eldred. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Raphael Church in Eldred with the Rev. John Murphy, pastor, and the Rev. Samuel Slocum and the Rev. Brian Vossler as concelebrants. Burial will follow in St. Raphael Cemetery, Eldred.
The rosary will be recited at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Flowers are gratefully declined by the family.
