2:58, I work at a bank and you'd be surprised at what some people will do with little thought for the consequences. In some cases, I believe it's due to a mental illness. In others, desperation or greed.

You would be amazed how often this happens...unbelievable!

It could have just been a miscalcuation of what was in her bank account or something went through sooner than she was hoping. Have you ever written a check and asked the person to hold it until Friday? None of us are perfect and this happens to more people then you know.

Maybe it is a good thing that this article was posted. Someone thinking about writting bad checks might (and I mean might) wise up.

Does one realize the cost of doing this? It is far greater then the amount of the written check. Costs, fees, penalties, etc are tacked onto the original amount.

Are you people kidding??? Bad checks are in the FreePress court reports all the time. Businesses wait till they have enough to turn in and wham. Tons in the paper. Lots for Ackley & Son's, sometimes Big M, even Vargeson's and Peston's. Everyone wants to feed their family. At least they weren't caught for shop lifting.

Banks do offer over-draft accounts.

Actually writing bad checks is theft. You give the merchant a piece of paper that says you will give them a certain amount of money. When they get a response from your bank that says you don't have enough money in your account, they are legally required to notify you by mail and give you 10 days to pay them the money. If you don't, you have effectively shoplifted.

Wrong is wrong, quit making excuses for people.

How many times was she asked to make it good?

If she was a good customer of the bank, they would have honored the check, called her and told her to put more money in her account. The banks know who is good for it and who is not.
