Cuba, NY---Walter N. Wilson, 83, of Cuba, NY, formerly of Shinglehouse, PA, died Wednesday, February 3, 2010 in Cuba Memorial Hospital Palliative Care Unit, Cuba, NY, after a long illness.

Born October 6, 1926 in Olean, NY, he was a son of David C. and Nora Corkins Wilson. On September 13, 1960 in Shinglehouse, PA, he married Julia J. Cole, who died on July 26, 2007.

He attended school in Hinsdale and Olean. Mr. Wilson was a U.S. Navy veteran having served during World War II attaining the rank of Seaman First Class. He received five campaign medals and had served on the USS Rudyard Bay Carrier. He was employed by the railroad in Olean and later was employed by the former Acme Electric Company in Cuba. Mr. Wilson retired from the Olean Tile Plant in 1981.

Mr. Wilson was a life member of the Shinglehouse American Legion Post 530 and a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Smethport. He, along with his wife, attended USS Rudyard Bay Carrier Reunions in all parts of the country. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and digging leeks. He also enjoyed gardening, especially his flower gardens.

Surviving are a stepson, Rodney L. (Jeanne) Stives of Portville, NY; two stepdaughters-in-law, Penny J. Stives of Duke Center, PA and Lois Stives of Portville; seven step-grandchildren: Tammy (Toby) Miller, Terrie (Jeff) Borkowski, Kira (Guy) Fox, Richard “Rick” Stives, Christine (Steve) Carpenter, Robert (Brandi) Stives, and Nicholas (Brandi) Stives; nine step-great-grandchildren: Brody Fox, Ben Fox, Kirk Howard, Kyle Howard, Kelby Howard, Albanie Stives, Joel Stives, Caleb Carpenter and Tyler Stives; four sisters: Dolores Ripple of Friendship, Patricia (Michael) DeFilipps of Holly, NY, Carol Glasspool of Silver Springs, FL, and Kathleen Brien of Brockport, NY; a brother, Robert Wilson of Holly, NY; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife, Mr. Wilson was predeceased by two stepsons, Robert Stives and Richard Stives; two brothers, John Wilson and Richard Wilson; and a sister, Sharlean Neibel.

Friends may call on Friday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Virgil L. Howard Funeral Home, Shinglehouse, PA where funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 6, 2010 at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Chris M. Hamlett, pastor of St. Theresa Catholic Church, Shinglehouse, PA, officiating. Committal services and burial will be held in the West Genesee Cemetery, Obi, NY.

Members of the Potter County Honor Guard will accord full military honors on Saturday.
