Anne Rita Ryan Scanlan, 94, of Ambler, PA

AMBLER, PA - Anne Rita Ryan Scanlan, 94, of Ambler died Wednesday (March 17, 2010) at home.

Born Aug. 27, 1915, in Port Allegany, she was a daughter of the late William Patrick and Bridgid Josephine Fitzstephens Ryan.

Rita was a graduate of Villa Maria College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in French. She was a substitute teacher at Smethport Area Junior-Senior High School, often teaching French and Latin, for 17 years until her retirement at age 73. She had been owner of the Smethport Garage Co., the first auto dealership in the state of Pennsylvania.

Rita was a member of St. Joseph Church in Ambler, Catholic Daughters of America, McKean County Historical Society where she served as vice president and was a CCD teacher at St. Elizabeth Church in Smethport. Her father was a professional baseball player who was a catcher for Toronto and he owned several hotels. He introduced her to many early baseball legends and entertainment stars of the era.

She had perfect scores on her New York Regents exams when she was a student. Rita did a great deal of community outreach helping the elderly and needy. She was proud of her Irish heritage and its tradition of storytelling, and she died on St. Patrick's Day.

Surviving are seven children, Collenn Ann (William) McClay of Drexel Hill, Michael James (Margaret) Scanlan of Golden, CO, Dennis Eugene Scanlan of Boise, ID, Marie Louise (Samuel) Anderson and Brian Christopher Scanlan, both of Drexel Hill, Rosemary (Neil) Jacob of Ambler and Jane Rita Scanlan of Melbourne, FL; nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a brother, William Stephen Ryan; and a sister, Mary Frances Cunningham.

Family and friends may call Tuesday from 9 to 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Church, 16 S. Spring Garden St., Ambler, with a funeral Mass to follow at 10 a.m.

An additional funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday (March 25, 2010) at 10 a.m. in St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church in Smethport. Burial will be in St. Elizabeth Cemetery, Smethport.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, P.O. Box 1000, Dept. 142, Memphis, TN 38148-0142; or to Catholic Social Services, 222 N. 17th St., Third Floor, Philadelphia, PA 19103-1299.

Arrangements are under direction of the Emil J. Ciavarelli Family Funeral Homes in Ambler and Hartle-Tarbox Funeral Homes in Smethport.
