Bertha M. Peterson, 84, of East Valley Road, Coryville, PA

CORYVILLE, PA - Bertha M. Peterson, 84, of East Valley Road, died Tuesday (March 23, 2010) at Sena Kean Manor in Smethport.

Born Feb. 28, 1926, in Lewis Run, she was a daughter of Bradford and Martha Bennett Wood. On March 23, 1944, in Breckin Ridge, Ky., she married George E. "Pete" Peterson, who passed away Aug. 25, 1996.

Mrs. Peterson attended school in Lewis Run and had resided in Coryville since 1962.
She had been employed by Gray's Drugstore in Bradford and also worked as a waitress at the Congress Street Diner in Bradford and the Smethport Diner. For 20 years, Mrs. Peterson was employed by W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery Co., retiring in 1987.

She was a member of Coryville Church of Faith, and she was a member and past president and presently chaplain of Eldred American Legion Auxiliary Post 887. Mrs. Peterson was also a member of the Eight and 40 Club. She also was a member and senior regent for 30 years of the Women of the Moose of Port Allegany 2188.

Mrs. Peterson was also a member of the Smethport Senior Center. She loved people and doing things for others and was an avid bingo player.
Mrs. Peterson is survived by two sons, George (Anita) Peterson of Canonsburg and Donald "Whitey" Peterson of Coryville; a daughter, Bea Mattson of Port Allegany; two brothers, Bob Wood of Bradford and Bud (Gail) Wood of Rio Rico, Ariz; three sisters, Lillian Middlebrough and Judy Smith, both of Smethport, and Clara Stives of El Paso, Texas; nine grand-children; 16 great-grandchildren; 15 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Peterson also helped to raise five children.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Frank Wood; and a sister, Esther Moore.

Friends and family may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Frame Funeral Home in Eldred. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday (March 28, 2010) at the funeral home. The Rev. Kent Hill, pastor of Coryville Church of Faith, will officiate. Burial will be in Lamphier Cemetery in Eldred. The Eldred American Legion Auxiliary will conduct a prayer service at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the Eldred American Legion Auxiliary or to the American Cancer Society.
