160 POUNDS
--Penn-Live.com

Eric Hess, Benton, def. Dirk Cowburn, Couderspot, 1-0.

Comment: Disappointing final from an action standpoint but give credit to Hess, a returning champ, for thwarting Cowburn's bid to become a three-time gold medalist. A second-period escape is all of the scoring as Cowburn can't get going from bottom against the lanky Hess in the third.

Dirk holds a record that will not be broken for many years.. he wrestled a great match and as Vince Lombardi says, "The greatest accomplishment is not in never falling, but in rising again after you fall..." Hess wrestled a smart match and he indeed is the state champ this year. I am very proud of Dirk and what he has done for the Coudersport name.. Dirk will continue his career at Penn State with the best recruiting class in the nation and will continue a legacy that deserves respect. Best of luck Dirk and wish I could have been there.

Where does "shame" ever come in to any kind of commentary when discussing this young man.

Dirk isn't just the best wrestler to come out of Coudy, on the HS level he is arguably the best to ever come out of District 9.

Eric Hess is a great wrestler who has had the benefit to wrestle for a storied program at Benton and for Russ Hughes who is a former Penn State great.

On a different day with a competent ref and a better coaching decision, Dirk is a three time champ.

Chin up Dirk, you have provided the Coudersport wrestling fan with a huge source of pride with your amazing accomplishments and more importantly your character.

I can't wait to see your continued successes in The Blue and White.

A better coaching decision? What an arm chair comment. Dirk is an awesome wrestler, brought 99% of the action, got short changed on the reversal, but failed to escape, that's what makes PIAA great, he will do great at PSU and one narrow loss in the State finals will only fuel his drive for even greater success. Best wishes Dirk, and thanks Aaron Wright and ALL of Dirk's coaches for your personal self sacrifice to develop and assist him in his incredible achievements

After watching the match up-close from the video and reading the above response about Hess being better that Cowburn is an absolute insane comment. Hess did nothing and I mean nothing to win that match.
What in the heck, those two refs were seeing, I have no idea. To grab our opponents leg and hang on for dear life like you’re on a carnival ride? I don't call that smart wrestling, I call that a kid that was scared to come out and wrestle Cowburn.
This leads me to stalling, where was the stalling call? Since when can you run the entire first period of the match then grab a leg and hang on for dear life? Ridiculous!
Cowburn has accomplished many things at Coudersport HS and within D9, he will continue to great things at PSU. And just the obvious question here, if Hess is so much better than Cowburn (from comment above) why wasn't Cael Sanderson knocking on is door this past summer for a commitment?
Well Done Cowburn—You have nothing to be ashamed of! Keep your head held high and do great things at PSU, as we know you will!

"Hess did nothing and I mean nothing to win that match."

Hess scored....Cowburn didn't. All I saw was Cowburn unable to get away from Hess to get the reversal...just scrambling to the boundary. At this level, neither boy has anything at all to be ashamed of. They are obviously both top class wrestlers and BOTH desrerve pats on the back. Hess didn't look scared at all to me.

Anonymous said...

Thanks Mrs. Hess at 2:46 look the video over again, when the leg was in the reversal should have been awarded. Take nothing away from Hess he did what he had to do, but the majority of action was dished by Cowburn, its the referee that failed to regulate the action or lack of it. You can't run a guy out of bounds over and over or hang on a leg at that level with out so much as a warning..it's immaterial, congrats to both boys, see them again in college, stellar careers...

waterman your great acomplishments in wrestling have dazzled the wrestling world for years. your comment about coaching decisions surely lets us know with all your experience in the sport you would have been the better coach.....

Anonymous said...

Bad choice of words.

I'm sorry, I am not "Waterman", I don't live in District 9 anymore. And I apologize for coming off as insulting that was not my intent. but, I follow Dirk as well as other wrestling on the national scene.

I was at the Powerade Chistmas tournament and watched Eric Hess ride #1 Marshall Peppelman very hard for a period and watched him ride state runner up Nathanial Brown in their dual.

From what I've seen of Dirk he is a phenom on his feet and he was in on several shots at the state tourney final, I didn't mean to come off brusk I was just saying that I may have started him in neutral position for the third period. I once again apologize for questioning that one call by the coaches.
I have read interviews from Dirk where he praises Mr. Wright and he and the other coaches are to be commended for producing a champion. I wish everyone nothin but the best and continued successes.

7;40, that statement, I think ya got it backwards, Cowburn is twice the better wrestler !!!!!!! I have to agree with 12;49, you did not see Cael Sanderson knocking at Hess's door as he did Cowburn's, to me that alone says alot who's the better wrestler !!!!!! Dirk Cowburn is the BEST !!!!!

Anonymous said...

Congratulations to Dirk! Both of our sons are in JO and they look up to you like you are a Hollywood celebrity.
Hey Coudersport fans how come you take that big purple dildine banner to the basketball playoffs but not to the wrestling finals? We watched for it on TV and did not see it. Thanks to CVFD for flying that banner on the firetruck when they brought Dirk back into town.

Anonymous said...

I was at the state championship and thank God that stupid dildine banner did not show up! Wrestling fans are too smart for that crap!

Dirk you did a great job this weekend and we are all so proud of you!

What others have said about the younger kids looking up to Dirk is so true, I know my kids do. He is a celebrity in their eyes and he has always been so good to them. He takes the position of role model seriously and has always been very positive. Our family has always been Coudy wrestling fans but Dirk is turning us into PSU wrestling fans as well! We look forward to following his wrestling career for years to come.

And when you meet up with Hess again we will be watching, cheering you on!!

To 11:54 the banner was at Slippery Rock and it is a little hard to have something that big and artful in two places at the same time. Cut it in half and it would just say DINE and most people know enough to eat when they are hungrey.

Anonymous said...

Oh and we did get the banner back in time to the firehall for the parade to welcome Dirk home so really you should not be complaining. Make your own banner if you really want one.

Dirk, just plain & simple, you are the BEST & we all look at you Dirk, you set a great example not only for our school but for the whole community & you have a great set of parents who have been a mega influence in your life, also Dirk your little Sis is a darn gooooood.....athlete too & you can be just as proud of her as she is you.... Good Luck @ PSU & our entire family will follow you there too big guy !!!!!

Anonymous said...

You gotta be Nate Siebert, hello buddy re-watch the video Nate !!!! Hess was NOT better than Cowburn that day, Dirk got screwed Mega time, Cowburn took Hess down at first, & they never gave him his 2 pts!!!!!!I cannot believe you'd say that to your nephew Dirk !!!! Give credit where credit is due !!! Just rewatch the video, you hear people yelling two, two , two !!!!!! " Stick with your baseball "

Anonymous said...

Just watched the match again, & Dirk By far handled Hess !!! too bad he was cheated & ripped off by the two points he did not get, Dirk sure as hell impresses me more than the Hess kid !!! Hess never did one thing to deseve this match !!!! he never went after Dirk, acted scared of Dirk!!! Well Dirk all I can say is maybe you'll have another crack at this dude when ya go to PSU, always remember, what goes around, comes around, you got cheated Bud !!! it is obvious & I hope Cael Sanderson, coach from PSU sees it too !!! Every dog has their day Dirk !!! It will be different in college, ther will not be any of this bias shit either, I wonder if the refs were in kahoots with the Benton coaches, My goodness, you can see in this match itself who in the hell is the better wrestler & the hess kid never got a 2nd caution called on him nor did he get a stalling call. well Dirk one thing about it, you can hold your head up high & be proud of your achievements & accomplishments ! As far as I'm concerned you are one hell of an ATHLETE & WRESTLER !!! The DUMBASS that wrote you will not be the best as Hess is some sick sucker, they better watch this match till they see through their thick skull who in the hell is the best & better wrestler, It sure as hell is'nt Hess, Maybe they need glasses, do ya supose Dirk ?? Good Luck & I wish you all the Luck in the world ! Dirk you are a great kid & I have enjoyed watching you from the time you started wrestling & playing football now, " YOU go get his sorry ASS in college !!!!"

Anonymous said...

Nate Siebert—I haven't seen you in years! Well, I live down state now and haven't been to Shinglehouse in several years. But anyway, I MUST agree with 8:42! Hess isn't even in the same league as Cowburn! You need to really watch the video. Just like 8:42 stated; Cowburn took Hess down and was NOT awarded the two, then listen in the background when the take down took place and not awarded--the entire crowd was saying 2-oooooo. Then boo'd when it wasn't awarded!

The other thing that struck me very, very odd is Hess’ coach’s hardly said one word during that entire match, then on the other hand I heard Cowburn’s coach constantly talking to him, makes one wonder if this match was decided before it even started! Referring a wrestling match is much different than umpiring a ball game, this isn’t balls and strikes. You still umping?

Anonymous said...

Not only did he not recieve the two points, Hess was never called for stalling, the whole match is about Dirk Cowburn, tha's all you hear form the announcers, Cowburn was the aggressive wrestler, Hess did not do SHIT to win the match, he did not deserve to win the match, Cowburn is a far better wrestler, Hess did not get picked for " Daper Dan " so what does that say for him.. He certainly was not at all impressive !!!! I wander too if this match was not already decided before they went out on the mat !!!! It sure makes ya wonder !!! As already mentioned, you did not see Cael Sanderson knockin on Hess's door for Penn State, & again Cowburn I agree with 1;33, when you meet up with him in college wrestling, " YOU GO KICK HIS SORRY ASS !"

Anonymous said...

dam guys im not say dirk is not better i know he is the best but there nothing you can do it over i agree it look like it was over befor it started,i just say and dirk problem say the same i get you next time there nothing you can do that all i saying it over just kick his azz whan you meat again, and i hope they meet again dirk will wipe the mat with him please i hope you understand.dirk you should 0f won you are the better wrestler.i watch it. i think they just didnt went you to be 3x champ love you uncle nate

Anonymous said...

Oh My there Nate, you steppin on some toes here buddy when it comes to Dirk Cowburn !!! Dirk is one hell of a likeable young man & AWESOME wrestler, I myself believe the match was already decided before it even started, not just the 2pts they deprived Cowburn of but also the stalling issue with Hess, read the article on Facebook, put on by Cowburn's Mom, Kudos to the gentleman who wrote it! Cowburn was screwed, plain & simple & Dirk was the better wrestler !!!
