Hornell's A.L. Blades & Sons sold to Georgia company

By Andy Thompson
Hornell, N.Y. -Oldcastle Materials, Inc. today announced that it has acquired the assets of A.L. Blades & Sons Inc. of Hornell, a general contractor and construction materials manufacturer serving the Southern Tier of New York state and northern Pennsylvania.

Founded in 1922 by Archie Blades, one of the pioneers in the development of the asphalt paver, the company employs more than 250 people, according to a release issued this morning. The company is involved in projects ranging from site development to highway and bridge construction.

“Oldcastle Materials is very fortunate to bring on board a well-respected company with a commitment to its employees and the community. We welcome A.L. Blades & Sons to the Oldcastle Materials team and look forward to working together,’’ said Chris Madden, president of Oldcastle Materials, Northeast Division.

Bob Blades Jr., president of A.L. Blades & Sons, said in the release it was important to the family to ensure a stable future for the company and its employees.

“We are very excited about joining with Oldcastle Materials. They are a leader in this industry and they have a great reputation for innovation, quality and for maintaining the strengths of its individual companies,’’ said Blades. "We feel that we are leaving the company in good hands.”

Blades added that the owners would remain on for a time to ensure a smooth transition.

Oldcastle Materials, based in Atlanta, Ga., is a large vertically integrated supplier of construction materials in the United States: No. 1 in asphalt, No. 3 in aggregates, and top five in ready mixed concrete.
