Census Hoping To Count Everyone

County Passes 60% Mark In Returned Census Forms

censusbadgeJust over 61 percent of Potter County residents have filled out and mailed their 2010 U.S. Census questionnaires, according to a report issued today from the Potter County Commissioners. That’s above the statewide (59%) and national (54%) rates — and that’s a good thing, according to Potter County Planning Director Charlotte Dietrich. With about $10,000 in state and federal funding during the decade hinging on each person who is counted, the stakes are high, Dietrich pointed out.

She commended the residents of Allegany, Bingham, Genesee, Oswayo, Portage, Summit and Ulysses townships, as well as Oswayo Borough, for reaching the 70-percent milestone as of Friday, April 2. Local rates of return appear below. “Our goal is 100 percent,” Dietrich said. “As high as the consequences of an undercount are for the county, they’re even higher for the townships and boroughs.”

Census data are used to distribute more than 50 federal grants, including support for education, transportation, health and human services, housing, criminal justice, employment services, farming and environmental protection.

Some Potter County residents may have not yet received their 2010 U.S. Census questionnaires. They should call a toll-free number, 1-866-872-6868, if their form has not arrived by April 12. U.S. citizens are required by law to complete the census form. Temporary Census Bureau employees will soon begin door-to-door visits of residences that have not returned the questionnaire.

Questionnaires have been reduced from 10 pages to 10 questions. Potter County Human Services is encouraging anyone who has questions or concerns about the forms to attend a workshop at the agency’s office in Roulette from 1-3 pm on April 6 and April 13. There’s also a Questionnaire Assistance Center, available toll-free at 1-866-872-6868.

Percentage of questionnaires returned: Abbott 61, Allegany 74, Austin 53, Bingham 72, Clara 69, Coudersport 63, Eulalia 69, Galeton 66, Genesee 73, Harrison 67, Hector 43, Homer 59, Keating 47, Oswayo Boro 78, Oswayo Twp. 71, Pike 68, Pleasant Valley 64, Portage 78, Roulette 49, Sharon 66, Shinglehouse 61, Stewardson 12, Summit 75, Sweden 65, Sylvania 62, Ulysses Boro 68, Ulysses Twp. 70, West Branch 64, Wharton 55.

I see that it states that questionaires have been reduced in length. Did anyone have to fill out a longer, more detailed form this year?

Well I guess if they didn't know enough that I was here to send me a form in the first place I suspect that they aren't going to know enough to stop here and ask me anything either.

Thats pretty sad only a 60% return. and it was probably all the people who recieve assistance were the outstanding 40%.

Funny I have no trouble receiving my income tax forms, personal tax bill, school tax bill, property tax bill, central tax forms and have YET to receive this form?!

I did request the IRS put me on their "do not contact list"!
