Charles S. DOWNING, 81, of Genesee, PA, formerly of Cleveland, OH

Charles S. DOWNING, 81, of Genesee, PA, formerly of Cleveland, OH, died Tuesday, April 20, 2010 in the Cleveland Clinic.

Born August 17, 1928, in Cleveland, OH, he was the son of Charles and Katherine Zencoe Downing.

On February 25, 1967, in Cleveland, he married the former Mary Plummer, who survives. A US Navy Veteran, he served honorably from 1946 – 1947 and in the Korean War from 1951 – 1952. He was a self-employed painter for 40 years. He was a member of the American Legion Post #1012 in Whitesville, NY.

Surviving besides his wife, Mary, are: two sons, Michael (Denise) Downing of Walton Hills, OH and Leon Downing of Gulf Breeze, FL; a daughter, Laura (Will) Diehl of Norwalk, OH; nine grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; two brothers, William Downing and Daniel (Gerri) Downing, both of Cleveland; and a sister, Donna Roden of Houston, TX. Burial, with Military Rites, will be in Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery, Rittman, OH on Tuesday, April 27, 2010 at 11:30 AM. Arrangements are entrusted to the Olney Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Ulysses, PA.
