Herbert D. Cox Sr. of 2649 Haskell Road, Cuba, NY

CUBA, NY - Herbert D. Cox Sr. of 2649 Haskell Road passed away Monday (April 26, 2010) at his home, surrounded by his family, following a long illness.

Born Nov. 22, 1927, in Bradford, PA, he was a son of the late Zera and Esther Rifle Cox. On March 19, 1956, in Smethport, PA, he married the former Gwendolyn E. Chapman, who survives.

He attended Port Allegany High School and was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army Combat Engineers from 1946 to 1947. Herb worked in construction, having worked on two major pipeline projects in the United States; was employed at the former Line Material Co.; and retired from Boehmer Transportation in Machias.

Herb and his wife and numerous dogs enjoyed spending winter months in their home in Bunnell, FL. He had a great love for his four legged companions, both living and deceased. He enjoyed the large pond that he and his wife had built on their Deer Valley View Estate with their pet geese, ducks, swans and numerous wild Canadian geese that returned yearly. He was an avid NASCAR and Buffalo Bills fan.

Herb had a very strong faith in the Lord and loved to share it with everyone.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Herbert D. (Karen) Cox Jr. of Wellsville, NY, Donald A. (Sherry) Cox of Cuba, NY, Constance A. (Tim) Lemon of Olean, NY, Diane Pringle of WV, Roxanne (Pete) Scull of Portville, NY, Deborah (Jeff) Page of Westons Mills, NY, Mark (Mary) Cox of Lancaster, PA, Christine (Rich) Sosnowski of Portville, NY, Marcene (Tony) Aloi of Westons Mills and Kimberly Ginter of Allegany, NY; 24 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Waldo Cox and Robert Cox, both of Port Allegany, PA; and several nieces and nephews.


He was predeceased by his parents; his infant son, Daniel, in 1958; a grandson, Donald Cox Jr., in 1977; a brother, Zera "Buck" Cox Jr.; and several aunts and uncles.

Family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Guenther Funeral Home, Inc., 1303 E. State St., Olean. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday (April 29, 2010) in the United Pentecostal Church, 1100 Homer St., Olean. Pastor Steve Beattie will officiate. Burial will be in McKean Memorial Park, Lafayette, PA.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Joyful Rescues, 1319 Turock Drive, Cuba, NY 14727.
