Richard A. Sorrell, 84, of Coudersport, Pennsylvania

Richard A. Sorrell, 84, of Coudersport, Pennsylvania died Friday, April 9, 2010 at his home following a lengthy illness.

He was born on July 16, 1925 in Washington, D.C., the son of Percy A. and Beatrice Nelson Sorrell. On June 10, 1949 in Washington, D.C. he married Joanne Ruth Millard who survives. He had lived in Coudersport since 1988.

Mr. Sorrell was a graduate of McKinley High School, Washington, D.C. and in 1953 of the George Washington University, Washington, D.C. with a degree in Mechanical Engineering (B.M.E.). A veteran of World War II, he had served eight years in the U. S. Naval Reserve as an electrician's mate.

During his career he had been employed for 26 years by subsidiaries of Litton Industries, located in College Park, Maryland, and Delaware County, PA and for eight years by Boeing Vertol Co., Ridley Park, PA. As an electromechanical engineer and engineering manager he had been engaged in instrument and system design, product assurance, product design and application support and held a U. S. patent. He was a Life Member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and had been a Senior Member of the Society of Logistic Engineers.

He was an active member of Christ Episcopal Church and had been a vestry member and church treasurer. He had also taken an active volunteer role in Meals on Wheels for many years and had been a member of the Board of Directors and treasurer of the Coudersport Public Library.

Besides his wife he is survived by three sons, William A. Sorrell of Pottstown, PA, Thomas N. (Susan) Sorrell of Sylvania, OH, and Robert D. (Diana) Sorrell of Huntsville, AL; two daughters, Margaret S. (Daniel) Trueman of Gastonia, N.C. and Patricia S. (Thaddeus) Pajak of Indiana, PA; 9 grandchildren, a brother, James R. Sorrell of Miami, FL and one sister, Ann S. Applegate of San Diego, CA; and several nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. , Wednesday, April 14, 2010, at Christ Episcopal Church with the Reverend Elaine Silverstrim officiating. Burial will be in All Saints Episcopal Church Cemetery in Brookland, PA. Military rites will be accorded by members of the Potter County Honor Guard. Flowers are respectfully declined.
