Austin Park Expansion Meeting Tonight at 6:30 pm

Meeting May 26 On Austin Dam Park Expansion

austinmarkerA committee has been formed to work on a plan for expansion and improvements at the Austin Dam Memorial Park. Next meeting has been scheduled for Wednesday, May 26, at 6:30 pm in the Austin Firehall. The public is welcome. Anyone seeking additional information should contact David Brooks at 814-558-0605.

Austin Borough, in cooperation with Austin Dam Memorial Association (ADMA), hired Pashek Associates to create the plan, which will include elements of recreation/tourism, economic development and historic preservation. Pashek, a landscape architect and community planning firm, is being paid $60,000, with three separate state grants covering the cost. The company will develop a blueprint for expansion of the park around the historic Austin Dam ruins, with a goal of linking it with Austin Borough. A major component of the project is a southern access point to the park that could link it with Austin Borough and establish a recreation trail with historical attractions.

Austin Borough owns about 17 acres that encompass the ruins of a paper mill and other deteriorated structures along Freeman Run. ADMA owns 76 acres to the north. Another 20 to 30 acres in the region are owned by Patterson Lumber Company.
