Last day to sign up for guided tour of state forest

Last day to sign up for guided tour of state forest

The third annual Forest Management and Habitat Tour for Susquehannock State Forest will be held May 16 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Registration is due Sat. May 8.

The tour's main objective is to look at the challenges the forest faces in both sustainable forest and wildlife management and tools used to address them, according to Forester Troy Stimaker. "We would also like to be able to gain a better understanding of the concerns of those who use the Susquehannock State Forest and how we can improve our management to better suit the public's needs," he told the Williamsport Sun Gazette.

The tour begins at Cherry Springs State Park, where participants will hear from Chris Nicholas, Susquehannock State Forest district forester, who will give an overview of what the tour will encompass and what sites will be featured. Chip Harrison, the state park's manager, will talk about the features of Cherry Springs and what it has to offer.

Stops will include Cherry Springs State Park; a timber sale; a private parcel of forestland; and a unique property owned by the Bureau of Forestry – a field than was once an active farm. Management techniques, wildlife, and other topics will be discussed at each stop.

The tours are open to all ages. Transportation and lunch will be provided. For more information, or to register, call 814-274-3600 or e-mail fd15@state.pa.us
