Memorial Weekend Programming Cherry Springs State Park May 29 and 30, 2010

Memorial Weekend Programming
Cherry Springs State Park May 29 and 30, 2010

5-29-- 7:00 pm Matchless Fire Building
One of the most important things to know when camping is how to start a fire. But how do you start one if you do not have matches? Our naturalist will show you some fire starting techniques and share important fire safety information as well. Once the fire is lit, enjoy a few fireside stories. Meet the naturalist at the pavilion.

5-29-- 9:30 pm Night Skies Program-Stargazing with Binoculars
(The Search for Southern Star Clusters)
Binoculars are an excellent stargazing tool. Learn about the best kind for stargazing, from small and compact to “giant,” and then take a look at some night-sky objects that are best viewed through binoculars. We will search for star clusters hidden within constellations in the southern part of the sky. If you don’t own a pair of binoculars you may borrow one of ours. A limited number will be available. On your way out take home some astronomy information that will help you become familiar with the night skies of Cherry Springs.

5-30-- 7:00 pm Solar Viewing

Learn why the Sun is so important to life on earth, and discover how big our solar system is by helping to create a scale model. Afterward, take a closer look at our star through the park’s specially designed solar telescope. Try to find features such as sunspots and prominences. Meet the naturalist in the Night Skies Viewing Area.

5-30- 9:30 pm Night Skies Program-Galaxy Hunt

Telescopes help us to see objects in the night sky that are beyond our vision. Through the telescopes set up onsite, view galaxies within some of the best known constellations. After the program, pick up some astronomy information that you may find helpful in getting to know the night skies at Cherry Springs.

►Visitors should park their vehicles in the public parking lot and follow the lighted walkway to the
Night Skies Viewing Area for the evening astronomy programs.
►If the sky is unfavorable for astronomy, an alternative program will be held on the South side of the
park; however programs may be cancelled in the event of severe weather.
►For other programs see our calendar of events online at If you have a
question about Cherry Springs or our programs, please call 814-435-5010.
