Menfred L. Tenglund, 93, of Maple St., Port Allegany, PA

PORT ALLEGANY- Menfred L. Tenglund, 93, of Maple St., passed away Wednesday (May 12, 2010) in the Bradford Regional Medical Center, after a brief illness, surrounded by his family.

Born May 8, 1917, in Port Allegany, he was a son of John V. and Hulda E. Lundgren Tenglund. On April 3, 1941, at the Little Church around the corner in New York City, NY, he married Maxine L. “Peg” Holden, who survives.

He was a lifetime resident of the area and a graduate of Port Allegany High School, Class of 1935.

Early in his career, Menfred was employed by Pierce Glass, Port Allegany, then General Motors, Buffalo, NY. Menfred and Wilford Olson formed Olson-Tenglund (NAPA) Auto Parts, after being discharged from the military. Today there are three locations, Port Allegany, Smethport, and Coudersport.

He was a veteran of WWII, having served in the US Army, from 1938 through 1946.
Mr. Tenglund was very active member of his community. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Port Allegany, where he was a past Deacon and Elder; a 60 year member of the Star Hose Fire Dept. and American Legion both of Port Allegany; 50 year member of Liberty Lodge 505, F.& A.M., Port Allegany, and VFW Post 6391, Port Allegany, and former member of the Elks Club of Olean, NY. He was an avid gardener, and enjoyed hunting and snowmobiling.

Surviving in addition to his wife “Peg” are a son, John Roger Tenglund of Mayville, NY; a daughter, Nancy A. Tenglund of Port Allegany; six grandchildren: Lisa (Joe) Garner of Westerville, OH, Amy Tenglund of Addison, TX, John (Jen) Tenglund of Wildwood, MO, Debra (Ed) Hayden of Bradford, Chad (Christi) Tenglund of Brambleton, VA, Gregory Bee of Port Allegany; seven great-grandchildren: Devon, Kaitlyn, Tyler, Ainsley, Beckham, Ella, and Bradley.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Melvin Tenglund, and a sister, Aleda Tenglund.

Friends will be received from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Friday in the Switzer Funeral Home, Port Allegany. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday (May 15, 2010) in the First Presbyterian Church, Port Allegany, with Rev. Garen Smith, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Port Allegany.

A Masonic service will be held at 7:30 Friday in the funeral home.

A military service will be conducted by the Port Allegany Honor Guard following the burial.
Memorials can be made to the First Presbyterian Church or the Port Area Ambulance Service.
