Wednesday Night Fire At Canoe Place Inn Was Arson

FIRE SET AT CANOE PLACE

Matt Thompson snapped this photo Wednesday night as Star Hose Co. volunteer firefighters attack a small arson fire in a storage room at the Canoe Place Inn at Main & Arnold in Port Allegany. Lights in the background are from the silo at St. Gobain Glass on Glass Place.

The Pennsylvania State Police Fire Marshal at the Ridgway station, Port Allegany Borough Police Department, and the Port Allegany Fire Department investigated the origin and cause of a structure fire that damaged the Canoe Place Inn in Port Allegany Wednesday night.

The building and property are owned by Sheetz, Inc., of Altoona, PA, and will be torn down soon to make room for a new Sheetz store.

In a faxed report from the Fire Marshal, Trooper Agosti, of the Ridgway PSP Station reports that unknown actor(s) entered the building and ignited cardboard and miscellaneous materials.

Early detection and quick action by Star Hose Co. volunteers contained the fire to a storage room. There were no injuries. No damage estimate was available.

Anyone with any information regarding the fire is asked to contact the Port Allegany Borough Police Department.

Nobody has mentioned the swift response of the fire department. You guys did an awesome job, this could have spread to more buildings and people could have been hurt. Kudos Port Allegany fire department!

all and all its sad that The Canoe Place Inn is in this situation anyway....greed ....is what you call it ...lets just sell the whole town to outsiders and be done with the American Spirit..it could have been saved years back ..BUT NO...its horrible to see the demolition of a once proud estabishment.. now this makes The Mid Town Bar the last oldest original business left....THANK-YOU LYNN FARBER

Praise to the PAFD for their quick response and for all they do for us (like pumping out flooded basements;)

Secondly, I agree with a previous poster...there are WAY too many ignorant punks running around the streets of Port A. at all hours of the night. Lock 'em up, or make them do community service. It's certainly one of these little dopers that set this fire.
