Donald Ivan George of 670 Heiden Drive, Hummelstown, PA

Donald Ivan George of 670 Heiden Drive, Hummelstown, PA 17036 passed away Friday, June 11, 2010.

He was born January 25, 1929 in Westfield, Tioga County, PA, son of Ray and Cassie Martin George (deceased).

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Helen Franke George; children, Beth George Bremigan and husband Ralph of Muncie, IN, James Donald George and wife Susan; grandchildren, Lynn and Matthew George of Hershey, PA and Thomas Ivan Bremigan; brother, David George and wife Judy of Westfield, PA; sisters-in-law, Diane Franke Catlin of Fallbrook, CA and Wilma Franke Johnson and husband Donald of Wellsboro, PA; and many dear cousins.

Donald and Helen were baptized in the Westfield Baptist Church in November 1942. They were married in the same church on June 17, 1954. Donald served as deacon from 1955 to 2000 and as Sunday School teacher of teenage boys from 1950's through 1970's; he also served in leadership positions on the pulpit committee, in the local Mens Fellowship, on the church's 100th anniversary committee in 1991, and as church moderator. In the larger American Baptist Fellowship, Donald served on the Tioga Baptist Association Board, as Area VP on the ABCMenOPAD Board, and on the American Baptist Churches of PA and Delaware Region Board.

In July 1994, he was chosen Layman of the Year by the Baptist Region Mens Board. In addition, Donald also served his country and community. He served in the US Air Force for four years, has been a member (and adjutant) of the Gerald G. Griffin Post 519 American Legion since 1952; a member of the Masonic Lodge #477 since 1955, a member of Coudersport Consistory since 1974, Zembo Shrine of Harrisburg and Hershey Shrine Club since 2002.

He was a Westfield Boro councilman 1974-1979, a boro auditor and a member of the Planning Commission and Sewer Authority. He was a Boy Scout as a youth, a Boy Scout Committee member 1969-1980 and a Merit Badge Counselor (Personal Management). Donald also worked as a volunteer at the Westfield public Library after his retirement. After graduating from Westfield High School, Donald worked in the office of the Eberle Tanning Company for a year. Following his honorable discharge, Donald was employed by Consolidated Natural Gas Transmission Corporation. He retired in January 1990 as Area Supervisor, Lease & Right-of-Way (State of NY and Northern PA) after 37 years and 4 months.

Donald and Helen moved to the Hershey area in 2000 where they have been associate members of the Derry Presbyterian Church. Donald served there in several ways and enjoyed Wednesday morning golf with other church men.

Receiving visitors 6-8 p.m., Sunday, June 13 at Kenyon Funeral Home. Services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, June 14 at Westfield Baptist Church and 2 p.m. Friday, June 18 at Derry Presbyterian Church, Hershey. Burial at Champlin Cemetery. Clergy: Rev. Dr. Louis George and Pastor Lewis Young.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Westfield Public Library or Hospice of Central PA, 1370 Linglestown Road, Harrisburg, PA 17110.
